Examinations

Students must pass 120 CATS points of taught modules on the programme and complete a Dissertation (60 CATS points) to be eligible for the award of a Master of Science in Advanced Professional Practice.

The pass mark for all taught modules and the dissertation is 50%.

Students will have the opportunity to resit failed modules once, at the next available opportunity, usually at the end of the following semester, for a maximum mark of 50%.

Students who do not pass all modules by the end of a semester will be given academic advice on how best to manage their workload. In particular, students who have failed all taught modules in a semester will normally be advised to defer all or some of their resits in order to ensure a manageable and balanced academic load.

Opportunities to resit or defer assessments will be discussed on a case-by-case basis, taking into account individual progress and circumstances.

The dissertation must be submitted within a period of no more than two years after completion of the taught modules.

The degree will be classified in accordance with the University General Regulations, Study Regulations, Mark Scales.

The Master’s Degree programme includes exit pathways at both Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate level.

A Postgraduate Diploma can be awarded for successful completion of a minimum of 120 CATS but less than 180 CATS of any modules on the programme.

A Postgraduate Certificate can be awarded for successful completion of a minimum of 60 CATS but less than 120 CATS of any modules on the programme.

Candidates who pass all the taught modules but who fail to achieve a mark of at least 50% in the dissertation shall be eligible for the award of Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Professional Practice.

For Master's Degrees, a pass with distinction will be awarded only when the following three conditions have been satisfied; an overall average of 70+ is achieved and a mark of 70+ is achieved in the dissertation module and an average of 65+ is achieved in the other modules.

Where students have completed a School of Nursing and Midwifery, QUB postgraduate programme that leads to a Professional Award (for example: Post Grad Diploma Specialist Practice, Post Grad Cert Nurse Prescribing) and have not accepted any academic accreditation, they may take the option of transferring to the MSc programme. Alternatively, a student may return their parchment and transfer to the MSc programme. This option is available within a limited period.

Notes

The Master of Science in Advanced Professional Practice consists of two discrete Stages, 1 & 2, that comprise taught modules and a dissertation. Students must successfully take and pass six taught modules (120 CATS points – stage 1), including: one compulsory research module (NUR7002 or NUR7010); two pathway specific modules and three optional modules that may be selected from those available across the specialist pathways or the wider general options modules (see list of modules) and a dissertation (60 CATS points–stage 2).

Alternatively, students may opt for the Master of Science in Advanced Professional Practice with one of the nine specialist pathways, please see pathway specific programme specifications. This option consists of two discreet stages,1 & 2 that comprises taught modules and a dissertation (120 CATS points – stage 1), including one compulsory research module (NUR7002 or NUR7010); two pathway specific modules (choose from HSN7020, HSN7077 and HSN7038) and three optional modules that may be selected from the wider general option modules (see list of modules) and a dissertation (60 CATS points – stage 2).

Please note:
·NMP7002 Health Assessment has an OSCE is Pass/Fail and must be successfully completed.
·The MSc in Advanced Professional Practice is open to Registered Nurses, Registered Midwives, Allied Health Professionals, paramedics and other professions from a range of backgrounds.
·* Some modules may have restrictions and students must hold the relevant professional registration or be working in the practice area.
