Queen's achieves Platinum status for environmental leadership
Queen's has once again achieved Platinum Status in the 2025 Northern Ireland Environmental Benchmarking Survey.
The NI Environmental Benchmarking Survey is Northern Ireland's leading environmental benchmarking exercise, attracting organisations from numerous industries. By taking part, Queen's publicly demonstrates its commitment to being environmentally responsible and transparent.
Professor Michael Alcorn, Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Sustainability and Strategic Project at Queen's University Belfast, said:
"It is great to see our commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals once again recognised with a platinum status accolade from Business in the Community. We are proud to be embedding sustainability across all university activity in line with our Strategy 2030 and Net Zero Plan, taking a collaborative approach to inspiring trust and action through transparent results-driven reporting of our progress."
150 NI-based organisations from sectors including general manufacturing; local authority; education; utilities; construction; ICT; and food and drink took part in the Survey, with 41 organisations achieving the top Platinum level. Queen's is also one of only two organisations to be awarded Platinum in the ‘Education’ category.
Andrew Muir, Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs in Northern Ireland commented:
"It is incredibly heartening that businesses across Northern Ireland are leading the way to improve environmental performance and deliver climate action. Businesses understand the scale of the risks we face from climate change but also the magnitude of the opportunities that exist through pursuing a low carbon approach to growing our economy.
"I am delighted that 150 Northern Ireland businesses have responded to BITC's Environment Survey to measure progress on their environmental performance. I would like to thank Business in the Community for their leadership on this critical issue and I would urge businesses to continue to ramp up their environmental and climate ambitions. By working collectively across both the public and private sectors we can better protect our environment, maximise economic opportunities and create a cleaner, fairer society for everyone."
Commenting on Queen's success, Sara Lynch, Head of Sustainability, at Queen's University Belfast, said:
"We are delighted to once again have achieved platinum status in these prestigious regional awards, named as one of Northern Ireland's top companies for environmental leadership. This recognition of our ongoing dedication to sustainability across all areas of our activities is the result of the commitment and collaborative working of the entire university community."
