Queen’s Law Professor elected to the Academy of Social Sciences
Professor Thérèse Murphy, from the School of Law at Queen’s, has been elected as a Fellow of the national Academy of Social Sciences.
Professor Murphy’s research focuses on human rights law and practice, and she is especially interested in the relationship between health and human rights, including the right to science and the relationship between new technologies and human rights.
She is a member of the multidisciplinary European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies which provides independent advice to the President of the European Commission.
Professor Murphy is currently the Raoul Wallenberg Visiting Chair in Human Rights and Humanitarian Law and Conjoint Professor at the Faculty of Law at Lund University, Sweden
Speaking about the honour, Professor Murphy said:
“Science is more than the natural sciences; it includes the social sciences too. Let’s remember that when we call on science to help us make sense of the world and secure the future.”
Congratulating Professor Murphy on her Fellowship, Professor Nola Hewitt-Dundas, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at Queen’s said:

Professor Murphy is one of 41 leading social scientists elected to the Academy this spring. The new Fellows have made substantial contributions to social science in a range of areas including land law reform, rural socio-economic change, ageing populations, urban development challenges and migration. Together their work highlights the importance, breadth, and relevance of the social sciences to tackling the varied challenges facing society today. As well as excellence in research, many of the Fellows, who are drawn from a variety of backgrounds, disciplines, and professions, have also made significant contributions to industry, policy, and higher education.
