Queen’s Annual Fund sparks inspiring friendships

What began as a routine conversation during the Queen’s Annual Fund Telethon turned into a moment of generosity and shared purpose, one that reflects the very heart of the campaign.

When Queen’s University graduate Margaret received a call from student fundraiser Dylan Carlin, she hadn’t expected it to be the start of an inspiring friendship. What began as a routine conversation during the Queen’s Annual Fund Telethon turned into a moment of generosity and shared purpose, one that reflects the very heart of the campaign.

After speaking with Dylan, Margaret decided to increase her monthly contribution from £20 to £100, helping more students access vital opportunities and support. The two later met on campus to celebrate the connection that began with that phone call, a reminder of how Queen’s spirit continues long after graduation.

Margaret recalls:

“I remember that we had to borrow money in my final year in order to finish my degree and I’ve never forgotten that. That’s why I try to support students today. I know what a difference it can make.”

Dylan, now a Queen’s graduate of Business Management, has been part of the Annual Fund since his second year at Queen’s.

“I’ve been involved in the Annual Fund since my second year and it’s been amazing to see the impact on student health and experience around campus,” he said. “You can see how these projects make a real difference - whether it’s mental health support, sporting activity, or giving back to the community.”

Each year, the Telethon connects Queen’s students with around 1,000 graduates, sharing stories of how philanthropic gifts have enhanced the student experience. Some donors have been giving since the campaign first began in 1999, and their ongoing support continues to transform life at Queen’s.

Running from Monday 27 October to Thursday 27 November, this year’s campaign continues that mission: encouraging regular giving, reconnecting graduates with the University and helping shape a brighter future for current and future students.

Margaret’s advice to today’s students is simple:

“Try to embrace both sides - the academic and the social side as well.”

Since 1999, the Queen’s Annual Fund has supported hundreds of projects across the University, benefiting thousands of students. From improving mental health and supporting sporting activity to generating business ideas and giving back to local communities, every gift helps make the Queen’s experience even better.
