Spotlighting the Lore Society: Here, We Serve Mythology, Legends, and All Kinds of Folklore!

Interested in mythology, folklore and making new friends? The Lore Society at Queen's has returned with a schedule of mythical events, lectures and activities planned for the year ahead.

Norse runes

There is something sweet yet maddening about mythology (and its dense layers) that taps deep into our curiosity, leaving us craving for an epic tale of grandeur. Whether it is reading about Dionysus’s infamous Bacchae ritual or watching a web series on the Vikings’ adventures, we all have a longing for stories that are fantastical, vulnerable, raw, and full of intriguing mythical elements. The Queen's Lore Society offers a space to share this passion with other like-minded individuals, as we have a ton of fun activities, events and lectures planned for the year ahead!

Back for 2025 Membership

Originally founded in 2023, this society unfortunately fell into a period of dormancy in the last academic year. However, the Lore Society was widely known for conducting events like the Percy Jackson TV show screening, a book club discussing The Song of Achilles, social night outs and more. So, fret no more, we are back again in the big 2025, with a bundle of more exciting plans.

I am happy to tell you, we are open to all Queen’s students who have even the slightest interest towards myths and are eager to learn more. Since we are still in the process of revival, we are making registration completely free this year. The Aims of the Society

Now, let me tell you a bit more about the society and what you can expect from us! Firstly, we aim to cater to all kinds of myth-enthusiasts. Be it Greek, Roman, Norse, Celtic, Egyptian, or our new category, Hindu, we represent a varied range of mythological worlds. Secondly, our committee is already brainstorming potential events, which include intro-to-a-particular-myth sessions, film screenings, story circles, trivia nights, music nights (if we play Achilles Come Down on repeat, don’t blame us!), and even culturally immersive trips!

To put it simply, we are looking forward to creating a community where we can learn more about myths and have fun while we are at it. Moreover, we strongly believe that the Lore Society is increasingly vital to the student atmosphere, as it presents a safe space where you can unwind and get lost in legends of the past!

Although we primarily focus on providing a forum for mythology and folklore lovers, we further wish to strengthen our society’s presence by planning academic and socially driven initiatives to engage with the diverse histories of the world.

A message from the society’s president Eilish Monaghan:

"I am honoured to be the President of the Queen's Lore Society for the upcoming year and am looking forward to what the next academic year will bring for us! As President, my hope for the society is that it will become a community in which the student population can find a space for themselves to have fun while in university. As a society, we are aiming to cater to both the enjoyable and educational aspects of the mythological, and hopefully our events will reflect that.

"To anyone starting in Queen’s, I can’t recommend getting involved in student societies enough whether it be ours or any of the many others here - as it can be an amazing way to get involved in student life especially in your first year. I hope to meet many of you at our events this year and the freshers’ fair in September."

Our secretary says:

“My name is Alysha Healy and I’m your new secretary and wellbeing officer of the revitalised Lore Society! I’m a History and Archaeology student so it’s safe to say that I’m naturally intrigued by mythology. I grew up in a place called Rathcroghan which was the ancient capital of Connaught. So, from a very young age, I have gained an appreciation for many of Ireland’s most famous legends such as that of the Táin Bó Cúailgne (Cattle Raid of Cooley). As the secretary and wellbeing officer, I intend to ensure that all our events run as smoothly as possible and that we create a welcoming and warm environment.

"Our events are open to every student to every Queen's student, particularly those who have an interest in folklore. We intend to run our events at earlier times at the beginning of the year, which will make it easier for first year students and those who commute to attend. We hope that these events, in particular, will help first year students to form friendships and ease their transition into university life. We will be running a variety of different events throughout the year with the aim of providing an insight into Irish and European mythology."

We cannot wait to meet you and hear all your interesting ideas! We will be there at the Freshers’ Fair on 16 September. If you have any questions, feel free to email us at: lore-society@qub.ac.uk.  Meanwhile, check out our socials: Instagram and LinkedIn
