Lab45 is Queen’s University Belfast’s launchpad for early-stage research teams ready to explore the path to commercial success. Delivered in partnership with QUBIS, this dynamic five-mission initiative provides researchers with the strategic tools, mentorship, and expert guidance to prepare for accelerator and investment opportunities.

The Five Missions

MISSION 1: Launchpad for Commercialisation Strategy

Mission 1 introduces research teams to the fundamentals of commercialisation through workshops focused on strategic models such as Lean Start-Up and customer discovery. Participants gain a foundational understanding of commercial thinking and leave with a clearer strategic direction for their research ideas.

MISSION 2: Igniting Customer Discovery Strategy Tools

This mission helps teams shape their commercial offer using tools like the Business Model Canvas and Value Proposition Canvas, supported by real-world case studies. By the end, each team has mapped out their value proposition and is ready to begin engaging with potential customers.

MISSION 3: Orbiting for Testing Customer Discovery

Mission 3 supports teams in testing market assumptions using a range of practical tools. With coaching and real-world application- such as surveys or interviews- teams develop a tailored Testing Plan and gain confidence in evaluating market demand.

MISSION 4: Deploying Subject Matter Experts (SMEs)

Through one-to-one sessions, teams receive advice from commercial experts in their field. These mentors provide tailored support to refine market fit, strengthen business models, and help shape a credible go-to-market strategy.

MISSION 5: Readiness for Lift-Off

The final mission prepares teams for the next phase of their journey- whether that’s spin-out, licensing, or entering an accelerator. With help from the QUBIS+ team, participants map resources, evaluate readiness, and chart a clear course forward.

ELIGIBILITY

Lab45 is open to early-stage research teams at Queen’s University Belfast who:

• Have the support of their Technology Transfer Officer (TTO)

• Have an active Invention Disclosure underway
