The Athena SWAN Charter recognises commitment shown by Universities and their individual Schools and Departments to advancing gender equality.

Schools applying for SWAN awards must undertake a detailed analysis in their areas, enabling them to plan measurable actions that drive real impact in advancing gender equality.

The School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences was awarded Gold in the latest round, having held Silver since 2012. The School of Mathematics and Physics and the School of Nursing and Midwifery both renewed their Silver Awards, while the School of Arts, English and Languages achieved a Bronze award. All awards are valid until 2025.

Professor Karen McCloskey, Director of Queen's Gender Initiative and Academic Lead for Athena SWAN, said:

"Congratulations to all colleagues who have contributed towards this new Gold Award, and the renewal of School Silver and Bronze Awards. Gender equality progress in our Schools represents the dedication, collegiality and hard work of many people and it is wonderful to see this commitment recognized through these external peer-reviewed awards."

Professor Stuart Elborn, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Medicine, Health and Life Sciences, said:

"I congratulate and thank all colleagues who have contributed to Queen's success in the latest round of Athena SWAN Awards. In particular, well done to all colleagues in our School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences on achieving a third Gold Award for the University – another important milestone on our equality and diversity enhancement journey."

Professor Pascal McKeown, Head of the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences and Dean of Education, commented on the Gold Award:

"We are delighted that our sustained commitment to gender equality over the last decade has been recognized in this Gold Award. It is testament to all of the hard work undertaken by our staff and students, who have contributed to the advancement of a supportive and inclusive culture where all can flourish in their studies and careers."
