P7 pupils get a lecture from Professor Fluffy
Hundreds of P7 pupils have had a taste of life at Queen’s as part of the Professor Fluffy programme at the University. Professor Fluffy aims to inform and inspire young children to think about university as an option for their future.
The programme is part of the Widening Participation work carried out by Queen’s which is designed to support groups who are be underrepresented in higher education.
Over 300 pupils spent the day on campus getting stuck into a virtual reality sandbox, watching GeoArc lab experiments and finding out how heavy structures manage to stay up. They also had the opportunity to experience what it feels like to graduate.
Talking about the programme, the Widening Participation Unit Manager, Patricia Hampson, said: “The Professor Fluffy programme is designed to introduce upper primary pupils to university in an educational, interactive and fun way. We aim, in particular, to inspire primary school pupils to develop their STEM skills and visualise a possible future at university.
We have been able to showcase some of the best aspects of learning to these young children by partnering with the School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science – and have included a mini celebration to give a taste of what it might feel like to graduate - which will hopefully leave pupils interested in finding out even more.”
