Nursing and Midwifery Interviews

The selection process for Nursing and Midwifery places at Queen’s University Belfast will be different this year. To ensure that the Health and Social Care system has the best possible future Nurses and Midwives, we will be inviting all eligible applicants to an in person interview in the School of Nursing and Midwifery. We want to meet you and find out why you want to pursue a career in Nursing and/ or Midwifery.

The interviews are designed to evaluate candidates’ suitability for a career in Nursing and Midwifery by exploring key values and essential attributes, including: 

Interpersonal and communication skills

Commitment

The interview will focus on the values and attributes required to be a Nursing and Midwifery professional. You will be interviewed by a two person panel, which will include one member of academic staff and one other person, either a patient /carer, or nurse or midwife from practice. Interviews will last no longer than 20 minutes and you will be asked four questions to assess your suitability for a career in Nursing and/or Midwifery.  

When attending for interview it is important to wear something that makes you feel confident and comfortable, while showing you’ve made the effort to look professional.

Disability  

Candidates with a disability who may require reasonable adjustments are advised to contact the University in advance so that appropriate support can be provided.  

Preparing for admissions interviews

In-Person Interview Checklist

Before the Interview

  • Complete and return the online form.

  • Have valid photo ID ready (passport, driving licence, or identity card).

  • Research the field of Nursing and/or Midwifery that you have applied for so you can explain your reasons for choosing a career in this area. 

  • Reflect on your skills and qualities, with examples from your personal statement or elsewhere.

  • Practise answering questions aloud with a family member, friend, colleague or tutor.

  • Plan your journey to the Medical Biology Centre (MBC), 97 Lisburn Road, Belfast BT9 7BL. Parking is not available on site, but public car parks are nearby (e.g. Belfast City Hospital). The MBC is number 27 on the campus map.

On the Day

  • Allow extra time for travel and parking. If you are delayed, contact us using the number in your invitation letter. Interviews will start promptly.

  • Bring your photo ID for registration.

  • On arrival, staff will direct you to the interview area and waiting room.

  • Interviews last no longer than 20 minutes.

  • Candidates are assessed using a standardised scoring system, and offers are based on these results.

The School of Nursing and Midwifery

Queen's University is the only University in Northern Ireland that offers four fields of Nursing (Adult, Children and Young People’s, Learning Disabilities, Mental Health). We are also the only University in Northern Ireland that offers BSc Midwifery. Careers in each of these fields are very different and applicants are encouraged to research each of the programmes to ensure they make the right choice
