“From Hype to Institutionalization: Strategic, Ethical, and Organizational Foundations of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare Information Systems”

Attila Hertelendy

Florida International University

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming healthcare organizations, yet much of the existing discourse emphasizes technical capability rather than the organizational, strategic, and institutional conditions under which AI creates sustained value. This research seminar examines AI implementation in healthcare through the lens of information systems scholarship, focusing on how organizations move from experimental adoption to routinized, governable, and ethically grounded use of AI at scale. Drawing on empirical insights from real-world healthcare deployments and executive decision-making contexts, the seminar explores AI as a socio-technical system embedded within complex clinical, regulatory, and organizational environments.

The seminar advances a strategic IS perspective on healthcare AI by integrating governance structures, organizational readiness, workflow alignment, and ethical accountability into a unified conceptual framing. Particular attention is paid to tensions between innovation speed and institutional constraints, including professional autonomy, regulatory compliance, explainability requirements, and trust. Rather than treating AI as a discrete technological artifact, the discussion conceptualizes AI as an evolving organizational capability that reshapes decision rights, knowledge work, and power relations within healthcare systems.

For information systems scholars, the seminar highlights theoretical implications for digital transformation, IT governance, socio-technical change, and responsible AI. It also surfaces promising avenues for future research, including AI governance archetypes, value realization pathways, and the role of executive sensemaking in high-stakes AI adoption. The seminar is intended to stimulate critical discussion at the intersection of IS theory, healthcare contexts, and the organizational consequences of advanced AI technologies.
