In conjunction with the British Society of Criminology Northern Ireland Branch, the Institute of Criminology and Criminal Justice is delighted that Dr Susan Batchelor (University of Glasgow) will be presenting her research on "Repeat Violence Across the Life-Course: A qualitative typology".

This presentation introduces a novel typology of repeat victimisation, developed through analysis of 95 qualitative interviews conducted in Scotland (Batchelor and Gormley 2023). Using a critical life-course approach, it frames repeat violence as a cumulative process shaped by early adversities, ongoing marginalisation, and institutional violence, which fosters disengagement, exclusion, and reluctance to seek support. The typology identifies three distinct patterns - ‘Unsettled Lives’, ‘Mutual Violence’, and ‘Intermittent Victimisation’ - raising questions about how violence prevention might be reimagined to address the interconnected nature of violence across different contexts and stages of life.
