Queen's and Mohammad Bin Rashid University: A Partnership for Tomorrow
In January 2015, an academic partnership Services Agreement was signed between Queen’s and Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC) to support the development and establishment of the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU) in DHCC.
A Partnership in Healthcare Excellence
MBRU aims to be an internationally recognised provider of high quality healthcare education and a centre for healthcare research and, under the Agreement, Queen’s gives advice, support and guidance on the development of the new College of Medicine within MBRU.
His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chancellor of the University and Chairperson of its Board of Trustees, said:
“The UAE’s health sector advancement is closely tied to increasing access to quality medical education. Part of the country’s wider development strategy is to work towards a sustainable and innovative healthcare system with qualified workforce. As the Chancellor of MBRU, I see great potential in the university’s role in achieving these goals and strengthening the global healthcare value chain. The MBRU and its students are partners in the UAE’s commitment to build healthcare capacity and enhance its healthcare system.”
Her Excellency Dr Raja Easa Al Gurg, Vice Chairperson and Group CEO, Dubai Healthcare Authority (DHCA), and Vice Chairperson of MBRU’s Board of Trustees, said:
“This partnership provides an opportunity for MBRU to achieve its vision to be an internationally recognised provider of high quality healthcare education and a centre for healthcare research. We are confident that this partnership will extend its reach beyond the campus of the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences.
“At MBRU we have taken on the responsibility to develop competencies in the healthcare sector by providing quality medical education, which will help transform the country into one of the most innovative in the world.”
Queen’s Supports Success
Queen's University has enjoyed successful collaborations in the Middle East for many years.
MBRU aspires to be a benchmark for innovative healthcare education in the region as an integral component of national capacity development planning. Working with colleagues at MBRU, Queen’s subject specialists have helped to select world-class teaching and research staff, develop governance structures, design a curriculum, gain accreditation, and recruit and select students.
Speaking at the Inaugural White Coat Ceremony (pictured above), held in August 2016 to welcome the first cohort of medical students to MBRU, Professor Patrick G Johnston, President and Vice-Chancellor of Queen’s and Member of the Board of Trustees at MBRU, said:

The cohort will undertake a six-year Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) Program and will benefit from a student-centred medical education, state-of-the-art facilities, medical technologies and learning resources.
