Six-time FIM World Superbike Champion Jonathan Rea inspires next generation of engineers at Queen’s
FIM World Superbike Champion and honorary graduate Jonathan Rea has joined industry leaders and distinguished alumni at Queen’s University for an exclusive event, inspiring more than 100 future engineers.

Hosted in association with Ampito, the ‘From tech to track’ event is part of the University’s 180th anniversary celebrations, showcasing the intersection of motorsport, engineering, and cutting-edge technology.
Rea, who won six successive WorldSBK titles between 2015 and 2020, took part in insightful panel discussions alongside Paul Denning, Team Principal of the Pata Maxus Yamaha WorldSBK and Beatriz Neila, four-time Women's European Championship winner.
Other panellists included Dr Tom O’Kane, Crew Chief (for Andrea Locatelli), Pata Maxus Yamaha WorldSBK; Manny Pinon, Founder and CEO, Ampito and Ciara Burns, a Queen’s Mechanical Engineering graduate who is now working with Fortescue Zero.
More than 100 students from the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering formed the audience, along with business leaders and motorsport enthusiasts.
Expert insights
They heard first-hand from panel members about the science of performance, diversity in the sport, team dynamics, leadership and their personal career journeys.
They also gained insights into Queen’s University’s historic contribution to motorsport engineering, as well as expert knowledge on sustainability within the industry, engineering innovation, the role of data and technology and career pathways.
Jonathan Rea, who received his honorary degree in 2019, says he is delighted to be back at Queen’s. “It is fantastic to be back at Queen’s and to meet so many students – the next generation of engineers.
“Engineering plays a huge role in rider performance and during my career, I’ve had the honour of working with some incredible engineers. Each and every one has been part of my journey. It’s a pleasure to share my experiences with future engineers at Queen’s and hopefully pass on some useful insights and information.”
Professor Geert Dewulf, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, comments: “At Queen’s, as we celebrate our 180th year as a university, we have been proudly reflecting on our success at driving innovation, strengthening communities, and shaping a better future.
“It has been fantastic to hear from experts within the motorsport industry today and look at the historic contribution the university has made to motorsport engineering and racing. From the ground-breaking work of Team Optimum Grand Prix to the continued success of Queen’s Formula racing team, we have made huge strides. It is also inspiring to hear of the many opportunities within the industry for our students, who will lead the way as the next generation of engineers.”
As Queen’s celebrates the milestone year of activity, the 180 campaign will continue to share personal stories of local and global impact, inviting communities to engage with the university’s work and celebrate the shared legacy of shaping a better world for 180 years - and counting.
