Dr Peter McLoughlin

Dr McLoughlin is an expert on the Northern Ireland conflict and peace process (including Irish-America/US government and EU dimensions), and the political history of Ireland.

He has particular knowledge on the role of Irish-America and US government in the Northern Ireland conflict and peace process, and similarly of the EU role in both aiding the peace process and the challenges created by Brexit.

Dr McLoughlin has a broad knowledge of the political history of Ireland, especially in the 20th century, and how this continues to shape contemporary politics on both sides of the border (e.g. the rise of Sinn Féin in both jurisdictions and the implications for the future of the island).

He is currently writing a book on Irish America.

He has provided interviews and written contributions for major international broadsheets including The New York Times, The Financial Times, The Irish Times, Germany’s Die Zeit, and the Danish Weekendavisen, for online outlets of international broadcasters like NBC and PBS, and for local newspapers such The Belfast Telegraph, The Irish News, and Newsletter.

Various radio and TV contributions as expert commentator on a range of the subjects in his area of expertise. Outlets include the BBC Radio 5 breakfast and lunchtime shows, BBC Radio 4’s Westminster Hour, ABC News (Australia), CBC (Canada), ORF (Austria), France24, TRT (Turkey), Al Jazeera (Qatar/Arab world), Sky News, Channel 5, LBC, Times Radio, Newstalk (Ireland), and Downtown Radio (NI).

Dr McLoughlin has acted as a consultant/advisor for Channel 4 documentary The Real Derry: Jamie-Lee O'Donnell, and for an RTÉ programme on Nobel Peace Prize winner, John Hume, as part of the Ireland’s Greatest series, with Hume subsequently winning the All-Ireland public poll for the title of greatest person in Irish history. 

He is also a regular contributor to The Conversation and World Politics Review
