University of California Santa Cruz Summer Programme - Rory Brolly

My time in California was a truly transformative journey that threw me right into the heart of innovation in Silicon Valley.

From the waves of Santa Cruz to the mountainous redwood forests of the bay area, it was an incredible experience that opened my eyes to so many new possibilities.

Among the many formative experiences during the University of California Santa Cruz Global Entrepreneurship Programme, the visit to the Google campus in Silicon Valley stands out as a spark of inspiration. Walking through the campus was a surreal experience, it offered a glimpse into the cutting edge of technology and a culture that fosters creativity. It was one thing to dream of visiting a place like this, but another entirely to see first-hand how Google drives constant innovation.

However, the most impactful element was the chance to connect with the incredible people who make Google what it is. Having the opportunity to speak with influential figures like Jeremy Neuner transformed the experience from a simple tour into a pivotal learning moment. His talk was not just motivational, it provided practical, insightful advice on how to best navigate our own entrepreneurial ambitions. He didn't just inspire us to pursue our goals, he gave us a clearer roadmap for how to do it and a connection to last.

This encounter like many others showcased the general atmosphere of Silicon Valley that we were immersed in. We were surrounded by passionate people who all shared a relentless drive to learn more, to follow their curiosity, and to innovate yet had the generosity to help students like us follow our dreams. Thanks to this belief that students could achieve anything, this ground-breaking environment with direct access to visionary leaders proved incredibly powerful, leaving me with a renewed sense of purpose.

My perspective on California, and Silicon Valley in particular, was largely shaped by movie portrayals of an intensely competitive environment where only the most ruthless succeed. I arrived with the assumption that as a student, I might not be taken seriously given my lack of experience or technical background matching that of the intense ecosystem of talent that exists in the bay area. Surrounded by individuals with seemingly endless lists of achievements from top companies like Apple and Tesla, I initially felt a degree of imposter syndrome as I worried that my experience and ideas wouldn't hold weight.

However, the reality I encountered could not have been more different. The prevailing culture was one of profound openness and collaboration. To my surprise, every person we met, from seasoned entrepreneurs to industry experts, was genuinely happy to hear our ideas. They actively engaged, shared invaluable advice, provided guidance, and insisted that we explore our ambitions further with an overwhelming emphasis of failing fast and failing forward no matter what.

The primary challenge was not fighting for external validation, but overcoming my own self-doubt and gaining the confidence to take a risk pursuing something that I was passionate about. The incredibly supportive ecosystem was essential in acting as a catalyst, encouraging me to step out of my comfort zone and build genuine confidence in my ideas. This experience was transformative, dismantling my stereotypes and empowering me to begin building an international network and a solid foundation for my own start-up aspirations.

The programme’s educational approach was a refreshing departure from traditional classroom learning. The hands-on methodology, where theories were applied directly to our own business ideas from day one, created a uniquely immersive experience. Abstract concepts from our academic studies, such as the Lean Start-up methodology, were no longer just theories on a page; they became essential tools we used to navigate real-world challenges.

A key part of this practical education was learning how to pivot. We were often faced with key decisions or market feedback that required us to shift our original concepts. While this was an awkward experience at first, adapting and iterating quickly became second nature. This process gave me a newfound appreciation for business fundamentals and my academic learning. For example, simple tools like a mission statement, something I might have previously critiqued as pointless in business proved to be an invaluable anchor, allowing our team to pivot effectively while remaining true to our core purpose.

We developed practical skills in building and refining our Business Model Canvas, and through our interactions with incredible entrepreneurial mentors, I gained a deep appreciation for the critical importance of customer discovery and market validation. We had the invaluable opportunity daily to hone our pitching skills, presenting our ideas to inspiring professionals and discussing them over dinner with founders and venture capitalists.

The most significant development was how I viewed failure as the programme completely overturned my perception of it as it is worn as a badge of honour in the bay area. I no longer see it as a risk to be avoided, but as an integral part of the innovation process thanks to the relentless culture I learned in California to fail fast and fast forward constantly. This shift in mindset has been immensely liberating providing me with the confidence to take the leap and pursue my own start-up despite the risks leaving me excited for the journey ahead.

This programme has offered a life-changing experience that has fundamentally reshaped my academic perspective and career trajectory. The programme provided immense value to my degree by bridging the gap between academic theory and real-world application, helping me develop a greater appreciation for my studies and encouraging me to explore them via real-world application as concepts learned in lectures now have new relevance.

I always held the belief that starting a business was a goal for later in life, something to pursue only after gaining decades of experience or even just a far flung dream that would never become reality. This programme shattered that assumption and accelerated my entrepreneurial ambitions. It proved to me that I possess the foundational skills and knowledge now, and it instilled the confidence in me to pursue those ambitions now rather than later. The supportive atmosphere and the wisdom of our mentors made me realise that being young, curious and time rich with fewer risks to speak of, is a unique asset found at no other stage in life.

As a direct result, my ambitions are no longer a distant dream as I am now actively pursuing my start-up idea with my friend and co-founder. I plan to use my upcoming year abroad in America to scale our venture and explore new opportunities while furthering my studies. This experience has undoubtedly given me a competitive edge, not just as a line on my CV, but through the first-hand understanding of the Silicon Valley mindset. The UCSC Global Entrepreneurship Programme did more than teach me about business; it gave me the clarity, confidence, and drive to start building my future today.
