Supporting Staff to Lead on Sustainability
Every member of staff at Queen’s has a part to play in delivering a more sustainable future – through the choices we make, the skills we apply, and the leadership we model in our work.
Staff development is a core strand of our Driving Sustainability Through Education framework. Alongside curriculum integration, Living Labs, and student engagement, we offer dedicated training, networks and professional learning opportunities that help staff embed sustainability into teaching, operations and decision-making.
These opportunities are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and reflect Queen’s university-wide commitment to sustainability through education.
Explore the programmes and initiatives below to see how you can get involved.

Embedding Sustainability in the Curriculum
Our SEDA-accredited 12-week programme supports programme leaders and teaching staff to embed sustainability in curriculum design, pedagogy, assessment, and student engagement.
Participants complete assessed components and join a university-wide network of sustainability education leaders committed to transforming teaching and learning.

Understanding Climate. Empowering Action.
Over 2,000 staff and students at Queen’s have completed this certified programme, building practical knowledge of climate change, its impacts, and how to take meaningful action at both individual and institutional levels.

Developing Knowledge and Skills that make a Difference
A new programme of staff sustainability training is being developed to complement existing initiatives and ensure every member of staff, whether in academic, administrative, or operational roles, has the opportunity to develop sustainability knowledge and skills relevant to their work.

Collaborating for Success
Launched in December 2024, Queen’s Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Community of Practice brings together staff from across the university to explore how we embed sustainability in teaching, research, and community engagement.
Open to academic, administrative, and professional services staff, the group meets regularly throughout the year to share examples, build confidence, and support each other in putting ESD into practice.
Co-chaired by Dr Alison Calvert and Natalie Le Seelleur, the Community of Practice helps shape our collective approach to ESD and reports annually to the university’s Sustainability Board.

Every Role has a Part to Play
Whether you are looking to embed sustainability in your teaching, explore opportunities for collaboration, or take part in a training programme, there is support available.
