Queen’s University Belfast are committed to progressing positive sustainability change within Queen’s campus and beyond.

To achieve sustainability action, staff and student support is needed throughout campus, within teaching, research, operations and the students’ union.

On this page we have included information on those groups, staff and students who are key to decision-making and the delivery of key sustainability strategies and initiatives.

BOARDS AND GROUPS

  • The University Management Board

    The University Management Board (UMB) is responsible for the development of the Corporate Plan, and the development and implementation of approved strategies to support delivery of the Corporate Plan.

  • Queen’s Sustainability Board

    The Sustainability Board is responsible for the overseeing and monitoring the University’s Strategy 2030 commitments to embrace the Sustainable Development Goals across our activities. The Board will meet quarterly to review the progress of the University moving towards Net Zero. The group is chaired by Professor Michael Alcorn, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Strategic Projects and Sustainability.

    The board consists of the following individuals: 7 academic staff nominees, 19 professional services nominees, 1 trade union representative and 2 student representatives.

  • Sustainability Governance

    Sustainability Governance oversees the development and delivery of the Net Zero Plan for Queen’s with the support of the following Working Groups:

    Campus Decarbonisation Working Group

    The Campus Decarbonisation Working Group is responsible for monitoring emissions associated with energy, heat, water and travel against the Net Zero 2040 target, and identifying decarbonisation programmes and initiatives associated with energy efficiency and travel in line with the principles of the Net Zero 2040 Plan. The group is chaired by Sara Lynch (Head of Sustainability) and is composed of 1 academic nominee, 10 professional service staff and 1 student representative.

    Sustainability Engagement and Communications Working Group

    Focussed on development and delivery of a staff and student engagement strategy to support the delivery of the University’s Net Zero and wider sustainability ambitions. The development of a net-zero plan, engagement and communication plan which will provide a ‘Pathway to Sustainability’. The group is chaired by Professor Peter Robertson (School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering) and is composed of 2 academic nominees, 11 professional service staff and 2 student representatives.

    Sustainable Use of Goods and Services Working Group

    Focussed on the development and delivery of strategies for the measurement of emissions associated with waste and procurement and development and implementation of action plans to reduce these. The Group is Chaired by Joanne Mohammed and is composed of 4 professional service staff and 2 academic nominees.

  • Fairtrade Steering Group

    The Fairtrade Steering Group is focused on the renewal and achievement of the Fairtrade certification. The group is chaired by Brian Horgan, Head of Campus Food and Drink and is composed of 5 professional service staff and 1 student representative.
