Spotlight on Scream Queen’s Society
Thinking of joining one of our clubs or societies? Find out more about the Scream Queen's society!
Joining a club is about more than making new friends, it’s a chance to connect with like-minded people, have fun, and even enhance your CV.
At Queen’s, we’re proud to have over 200 clubs and societies, each with its own unique community and opportunities. In our Spotlight series, we’re delving into the stories behind these societies and meeting the passionate students who turn shared interests into something extraordinary. Whether you’re new to campus or simply looking to explore, this series promises inspiration, connection, and maybe even a little motivation to get involved.
This time, we’re chatting with Ben, the current President and Movie Manager of Scream Queens, to discover more about who they are and why you should consider joining their society.
I’m Ben Case, a level 2 Planning student and the President and Movie Manager for Scream Queens. I do most of the organising of films and licensing of films.
I was brought in by a horror loving friend who pushed to make this society exist. I’ve been a member of Scream Queen’s whole existence (since Feb 2025) and I’ve loved it the entire time!
Can you tell us a bit about the origins of your society? When and why was it founded?
We have a few founding members, but there are only a few that I really know. But to summarise, a couple of students wanted a space to enjoy horror and wanted to build a community that was connected through that.
They were inspired by DragonSlayers, which is a fantastic society that covers basically everything like board games, cosplay, social deductive games, TTRPGs like DND, anime, and video games. This led to us creating a lot of branches for people that are interested in many areas of horror such as spooky TTRPG manager, horror themed board games and podcasts AND a book club.

Last year, or from the start of 2024-25 school year, me and a couple of friends used to watch movies on Friday afternoons, and mainly the previous Movie Manager would organise it, and I guess this Soc also became an extension of our Friday movie nights.
We also have a few committee roles that were mandatory and a friend who wasn’t that into horror really wanted to help, so they created the Craft Club branch of Horror Soc. So, it was mainly a slow process of organising everything and its gradual accumulation over the last year to become what it is now.
What are the main goals of your society?
We want to keep the Society going. Like duh, but it takes a lot of effort. We want to continue our fortnightly movies and craft sessions. We want to get more people involved and get more regular with our activities. We want a short story and film competition. We want a spring-a-ween. We want to do several collaborations with other Socs like a vampire night or the pumpkin painting event we are doing with the Art Soc (another amazing soc that you should check out).
We want trick-or-treating, a haunted house, and a costume competition. We want to do more Halloween things. We want to do more board games, more karaoke, more movies, more craft, more more more! But we aren't a massive committee. We want to do everything, but we need to prioritise.
If our members have any ideas they want to see happen, we would love to make it happen! So yeah, our biggest goals are to continue what we have, try do as much as possible, and get feedback on what people want to see more of. Vague but very ambitious of us, we can do it!
What makes this society unique?
Because we are so new and cover such a broad interest, we are constantly trying to figure out how to do things that people will be interested in. Last year we had an Among Us night, a spooky TTRPG session of Dread, and the formal (which was like a big costume party with a movie and karaoke).

What do you think draws students to your society?
It's the fact that we are an interest-based Soc that is loosely focused on Horror. So anyone that is interested in it can have a space to enjoy. I think that's the biggest draw to the Soc!
What kind of events or activities does your society organise? Do you have any traditions?
We have movie nights and craft clubs regularly. The craft club is a blast, and we now have a tradition of singing and running a Le Poisson Steve night after one… eventful evening last year.
How does the society stay connected outside of events? Are there online groups, newsletters, group chats?
We have a Discord! If anyone wants to join, feel free to!
Can you share a memorable event or highlight from your time in the society?
I really enjoyed our formal last year. We booked a room in the Wee bar, by the SU bar. That night we all dressed up and we watched “Nerdy Prudes Must Die” and did Karaoke for the rest of the night.
How has being a member (or leader) in this society shaped your time at Queen’s?
I’ve been the President for three months and it's exhausting. I love my committee and getting to run so many fantastic events, and it’s so worth having gotten involved. I have so much fun meeting people who I am really happy to know, which I think that's the most important part of being in a Soc. I’ve been able to explore horror and talk about it with so many people who are excited about it and it's an amazing experience.

What advice would you give to someone considering joining your society?
TBH… start going to events. ESPECIALLY if you are new. We really try to be welcoming, and the more you come the easier it gets. You’ll get to know people and get more comfortable with them. There are so many of our members that are interested in horror, and we would love to chat!
Who is the society open to? Are there any requirements to join?
Scream Queens is fully available to anyone who wants to join. We have memberships for non-students and students alike. We love having people participate in our events so if anyone wants to see if being a member of Scream Queens is worth it, they definitely should.
What’s the best way for students interested in the society to get involved or find out more?
I think that the best way is to follow our Instagram because we post all our events there, and come to the events you are interested in! We would love to see you there <3
Is there anything else you’d like readers to know about the society?
We are a growing Soc and still figuring out what we need to focus on. Please give any feedback and we can make being a member so worth it!
