A Week in the Life of a Pharmacy Student at Queen's

GB student Elle takes us through a typical week as a Pharmacy student in Belfast, from practical workshops in the MBC to enjoying ice hockey games with friends.

Hi! I’m Elle, this is a typical week in my life during a semester. What I enjoy about my course is that the timetable varies with different workshops, practicals and self-study activities each week. I find the modules very interesting, and the lecturers and staff are very approachable if you have any questions or require further support!

Monday

I normally have a seminar at 9am on Monday mornings. After this I typically head home for lunch then might go to the library if I have assignments due. I am a member of the Walkie Talkie Girlie society, they organise many walks near campus, I enjoy taking part as it is a great chance to meet new people and maybe visit somewhere I’ve never been.

Belfast has so many great dessert spots including Mackles, Nugelato and Al Gelato

Tuesday

I have three lectures Tuesday mornings from 9am to 12pm. Followed by an hour gap in my timetable, my friends and I typically bring lunch with us and eat at the MBC before heading to the Pharmacy Building for a workshop in the pharmacy practice room. These workshops involve checking prescriptions and simulating talking to patients, and other healthcare professionals.

I really enjoy these workshops as it helps develop my communication and confidence and allows me to use the content covered in lectures and apply it to real situations that a pharmacist experiences, and what I may experience on placement.

Wednesday

I have two lectures on a Wednesday morning at the MBC. I really enjoy having lectures early in the day, so I have the rest of the day free. I typically spend the afternoon socialising with my friends, visiting the city centre or going the library if I have work due. I also like going for a walk around the Titanic Quarter or sitting in Botanic Gardens when the weather is nice. I also enjoy video-calling my friends from home, it’s great to catching up with them, we try and call every other week.

Thursday

On Thursday morning I have a practical. I enjoy them as they allow you to apply the methods and techniques you learn in lectures. After the practical, I have a bit of time to get lunch before heading back to university for a workshop at the Pharmacy Building. There are a lot of different workshops throughout the year, some focus on preparing for placement whilst others expand on a lecture and allow you to practise a topic that was introduced.

The stunning view on a recent hike of the Mourne Mountains!

This workshop finishes at 4.30pm, typically I will head back to my house and relax. I spend time with my housemates. We enjoy getting takeaways together and watch TV while waiting for the food to arrive. There are so many different places to order from, we always find somewhere that everyone likes.

Friday

On Fridays I typically have a 9am lecture at the MBC. There is an hour gap between my next lecture at 11am, so my friends and I will head for a coffee and food, typically at Social, the cafe in the Students' Union. I really enjoy pancakes from Social along with a smoothie or coffee. The SU is a short walk from the MBC, so it is handy to go to in between lectures. I will then have two more lectures at the MBC before another hour gap. I normally head back to my house to have lunch.

After lunch, I am back at the MBC for my last lecture. After it, I head back to my house. I usually have tea with my housemate. After this we will watch TV, play card games or maybe even head to a Belfast Giants ice hockey game. We have been to a few of the games and really enjoy them.

I’d definitely recommend going to watch the Belfast Giants play! There is always a great atmosphere

Saturday

Typically, I spend my Saturdays with my friend. We have driven along the Northern Coast, stopping at Giant’s Causeway. We have also visited Portrush, the Mourne Mountains, Newcastle and many other great places. We have even been lucky enough to have seen the Northern Lights twice!

I still can’t believe I got to see the Northern Lights, they were incredible

Sunday

I spend my Sunday mornings at a 10.30am Pilates class. After the class, I will stop for a coffee and lunch in the city centre. Some of my favourite coffee shops in the city centre are Black Sheep Coffee, Native Coffee and Bodega Bagels. I might also have a look around some shops before heading back home.

A bacon, egg and cheese bagel from Bodega Bagels! This is a favourite place of mine to visit for great coffee and food!

I typically spend my Sunday afternoons in the McClay library; I try to finish any seminar work and assignments I have. I also like writing my timetable for the week ahead in my planner along with any deadlines to keep organised. I normally leave the library around 4pm, I head home and relax before cooking my tea. I normally spend Sunday nights with my housemates catching up and watching TV.

Elle Frith

Pharmacy | Undergraduate Student | Liverpool, UK

Hi, I’m Elle, a pharmacy student at Queen’s. I chose to study here because I really enjoyed the university and the city on the open day. I am really enjoying time at university and have met so many great people and made so many memories.

I am from Liverpool, England. Moving away was scary at first but I definitely made the right choice, I’m so lucky to have such great friends and Liverpool is only a short flight away whenever I want to visit.

I am a member of a few societies here including the Pharmacy Society and the Walkie Talkie Girlie Society, I’d recommend joining one you’re interested in as they are a great way to socialise and make friends.
