Advisor

Once you become a Queen's student, you will be assigned an Advisor of Studies. Their role is to advise and support in areas such as module choices, re-sitting exams and changes to your programme. It is recommended that you meet with your Advisor once a year during the enrolment period at the beginning of the academic year.

To find out who your Advisor is, you can check in the Student Centre section of QSIS.

Tutor

Different to an Advisor, a Personal Tutor provides transition support for those moving into higher education and help with academic difficulties. Tutors can help to guide you towards relevant support services based on your particular needs, e.g. Student Wellbeing or Learning Development.

You can also access your Tutor's details through QSIS, or by contacting your School directly.

Student Representative

Do you have any feedback on your student/academic experience at Queen’s? From course content to assessment methods, Queen’s student reps are on standby for your questions and comments on these topics and more.

There will typically be at least one student rep per course level in both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes (School and Faculty reps are also available). Reps act as a liaison between students and academic staff by representing the views and opinions of students at a Student Voice Committee every semester. So if you have a burning question about your course, or want to provide some general feedback on seminars/lectures, make sure to become acquainted with your course rep!

Mentor

If you are interested in connecting with Queen's alumni and industry partners to enhance your university experience, the university offers several mentoring programmes in which you can network and further your capabilities.

For students within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, you have the opportunity to become a mentee within the AHSS Student-Industry Mentoring Programme. This involves being paired with a Queen's AHSS alumni and meeting several times over the course of a year to discuss your career goals following the completion of your course. Having a mentor that previously studied within your faculty gives you the opportunity to discuss how you can utilise your knowledge and skills in the workplace. Keep an eye out for applications opening next year.

MSc Business Analytics students are also given the opportunity to receive mentorship through the Data Duo Mentoring Programme offered by Queen's Business School. Students are paired with industry professionals to receive real-world insight into Northern Ireland's business and entrepreneurial sectors. Find out more about the programme from Business Analytics graduate Madhurya here.

Other mentoring programmes offered by Queen's include the School of Pyschology's Alumni Mentoring Programme, the INSPIRE Mentoring Scheme offered by the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences, and the Industry Mentoring offered by the School of Biological Sciences.

Interested in becoming a mentor yourself? The Queen's Reverse Mentoring Scheme provides you with the opportunity to discuss your experiences of being a university student with a member of Queen's staff, providing them with more insight and understanding of the student experience.

I’m a two-time graduate of Queen’s University Belfast and now a current staff member of Queen’s Global! As well as helping with general content management for the main Queen’s website, I also collaborate with current students to create relatable and useful content for the student blog.

I studied BA English and MA English Literary Studies at Queen’s and have since worked in various editorial positions in Belfast, including previous roles as Editorial Assistant and Assistant Commissioning Editor for local publications.

In my spare time, I enjoy reading novels (and attending various book clubs), studying Korean at the Queen’s Language Centre and attending Belfast Giants ice hockey games!
