From Mesmerising Circuits to Mocha Moments: A Term Full of Belfast Memories

MSc Electronics student Veena provides a snapshot of her life at Queen's and in Belfast, from working on circuit boards to enjoying coffee breaks on campus.

Circuit board

A circuit is said to be completed only when all the wires are connected, just like student life at Queen’s where each lecture, lab and late night chat adds thrill to my experience. As an Electronics student, my days are just as beautiful as buzzing bees on sunflowers - filled with rhythm and energy.

A journey of joy, laughter, love and learning, soldered into the heart of Queen’s.

Morning Enthusiast - Routine

I usually wake up around 7:00am to the refreshing buzz of my alarm. My day begins with a warm bed tea followed by a healthy breakfast to fuel up. I always walk to campus, which doubles as my morning cardio. My backpack is packed with essentials: a laptop, charger, notebook, calculator, and of course, a few snacks to get me through the day.

Campus and Academic Life

My week is a mix of lectures and hands-on project work. One of my favourite subjects is Microelectronics, and those lectures usually begin at 9:00am. The lecturers are incredibly supportive, and the advanced teaching methods help keep our concentration fully engaged throughout the sessions.

Mocha Time and Beauty Spots

Almost every day around 11:00am, you’ll find me at my usual coffee spot - Starbucks - sipping on my all-time favourite mocha. It’s the perfect break to relax and catch up with friends. We chill together within our beautiful campus, which blossoms like the prettiest flower nestled in nature. Queen’s truly feels like the heart of Belfast city - alive, welcoming, and full of charm.

McClay Library and My Circuit World

After break time, around 12:00pm, I head towards the McClay Library - the ideal place to work on my project. The library offers excellent facilities, including personal computers and a wide range of books that guide me through the process of developing my circuit-related work.

Evening Walk - Exploring Belfast

In the evening, I enjoy roaming around Belfast city centre for a bit of shopping, often with my favourite ice cream from Mackles - home to some of the tastiest flavours around. After that, my friends and I take a relaxing walk towards the iconic Big Fish, soaking in the cool breeze and the beauty of this vibrant city.

Night Fun with Cooking Skills

After a busy day, dinner time is the most enjoyable part of the evening. My friends and I come together to try out new recipes, cooking with laughter, fun, and plenty of chit-chat - a perfect way to unwind from the hectic day. The dining table fills with a variety of delicious dishes, and we take pride in appreciating each other's cooking skills. After dinner, the fun continues with light-hearted conversations and jokes.

After that, I head to my room - a classic and cosy space decorated with sticky notes, Polaroids, and a few lovely flowers that help calm my mind. Before going to bed, I go through my to-do list, wrapping up the day with a peaceful sleep - cuddled up with my teddy.

Veena Maruti Goudar

MSc Electronics | Postgraduate Student | India

I’m a postgraduate student at Queen’s University Belfast, studying Electronics Engineering. Originally from the vibrant city of Bangalore, India, and currently based in Belfast, I’ve always been curious about what goes on behind the scenes - both within the hardware of our devices and the technologies that keep us digitally connected. This fascination led me to pursue engineering, with a focus on embedded systems and digital design.

Outside of my studies, I love singing and going for long walks, which help me relax and truly enjoy life in Belfast. I also have a passion for travelling across beautiful countries - experiences that broaden my perspective and bring a sense of calm to my mind.

I’m always eager to learn something new -  whether it's exploring a new programming language or improving my soldering skills. I look forward to gaining practical industry experience that will allow me to make a meaningful impact.
