International visitors learn from local expertise on Child Participation

A delegation from the Taiwan Alliance for the Advancement of Youth Rights and Welfare, including its director and five young people, visited our Centre for Children's Rights on 6 June to learn from local expertise and share good practice on Child Participation. The visitors heard presentations by Michelle Templeton from the Centre and by colleagues from Belfast City Council, the Children's Law Centre, The National Children's Bureau (NI) and staff from the NI Commissioner for Children and Young People.

The visit follows on from Laura Lundy's work on child participation in Taiwan. In 2017 she was appointed by the Taiwanese government to a team of international experts who reviewed Taiwan's compliance with international children's rights standards. Laura returned to Taipei in 2018 to train the children's sector on rights-based child and youth participation and advised government on ways of involving children in public decision-making. The visit by the Taiwanese colleagues was a fact-finding mission which follows on from Laura Lundy's recommendations.
