Queen's marks European Week for Waste Reduction 2025
Queen’s was proud to celebrate European Week for Waste Reduction by hosting a comprehensive programme of events from the 24 to 27 November across the University campus that highlighted Queen’s commitment to sustainability and the circular economy.
The programme began with ‘Queen’s Zero Waste Approach’ initiative at the Junction Café, where the Queen’s Sustainability Team, supported by RiverRidge, Bryson Recycling and Vyta, engaged staff and students in discussions about the journey of waste and recycling, highlighting the importance of collective action in reducing environmental impact.
The University also raised awareness of the significant environmental challenge posed by single-use cups and Queen’s commitment to embedding sustainable practices into everyday campus life. With over two-million cups discarded across the island of Ireland each day, the campaign encouraged the Queen’s community to adopt reusable alternatives.
Queen’s Accommodation contributed to the programme by hosting a ‘Sashiko Stitching Workshop’, introducing participants to the traditional Japanese technique of functional and decorative mending. This event promoted sustainable fashion and mindful consumption, while offering an accessible skill to students.
Repair and reuse were further championed through the ‘Repair Café’, delivered in partnership with volunteers from Carryduff and Belfast Repair Café’s. Staff and students who attended were supported in repairing clothing and small electronic items, reinforcing the value of extending the life of everyday possessions. Complementary sewing and mending sessions, facilitated by the team from ‘Make It Fab’ provided participants with starter kits and practical skills to encourage long-term sustainable habits.
Cycling safety was addressed through a ‘Pop-Up Bike Check’ delivered by Freedom Cycles, which formed part of the wider Sustainability Fair in One Elmwood. The Fair showcases volunteering opportunities, sustainable catering options, and a book swap, while offering staff and students the chance to engage directly with the Sustainability Team and SU Volunteer.
The University’s commitment to community engagement was demonstrated through the ‘Big Autumn Clean Up’ on 26 November. Organised by the Sustainability Team, SU Volunteer and the Community Engagement Team, volunteers gathered at the McClay Library before taking part in a litter pick across the Holylands and Stranmillis.
Further initiatives included ‘Reuse and Repair at BT9’ which focused on sustainable fashion and clothing repair, and an ‘Upcycling’ evening at Queen’s Accommodation, where participants decorated tote bags and explored creative approaches to reusing materials.
Siobhan Purnell, Sustainability Programme Officer at Queen’s University said:
“European Week for Waste Reduction 2025 successfully brought together students, staff and partners to champion sustainability. The programme reflected our strategic commitment to embedding sustainable practices across campus and within the wider community, reinforcing Queen’s position as a leader in environmental responsibility.”
