Queen's University Belfast ranks among world’s best in 31 subjects

Queen's has been named as one of the world’s top universities for the study of 31 subjects in the latest edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject.

The 2024 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, released on 10 April 2024 by global higher education analyst QS Quacquarelli Symonds, provides independent comparative analysis on the performance of more than 16,400 individual university programmes, taken by students at more than 1500 universities in 96 locations around the world.

19 subject areas at Queen’s have been ranked in the top 200 in the world, up from 15 in the 2023 edition.

Other highlights include Pharmacy at Queen’s being ranked 35th in the world for Pharmacy and Pharmacology, up from 39th last year. Nursing, Performing Arts and Social Policy are all ranked in the top 100 in the world for their subject areas, and Philosophy has ranked for the first time this year.

QS uses five indicators to determine the rankings, taking into account academic reputation, employer reputation and faculty research. More information on the methodology used can be found on the QS website.

Welcoming the rankings, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Global Engagement at Queen’s, Professor Margaret Topping, said: “We are incredibly proud that Queen’s has been named as one of the world’s top universities for the study of 31 subjects. Performance rankings are one of the ways we can highlight the benefits of a research-led education from Queen’s. They set out comparisons across a number of areas such as research quality and collaborative international partnerships, employability and outcomes, and the learning experiences of our students, to illustrate the contribution our university makes to society and the economy.

“This significant achievement across a wide range of subject areas is testimony to the great collaborative work and dedication of our staff and students. This outcome recognises above all the excellence of our education, the impact of our research, and the value of our graduates, as voted for by academics and employers across the world.”
