Queen’s and Ulster University co-host research excellence showcase at Ulster Museum

The Graduate School at Queen’s University Belfast and The Doctoral College at Ulster University co-hosted the interdisciplinary event, which was the first collaboration of its kind between the two universities.

At the event, the Vice-Chancellor of each university addressed the audience to discuss the breadth and impact of research currently undertaken in Northern Ireland by highly skilled doctoral researchers and the impact this has on local business and the economy. 

Eight doctoral researchers from the two universities presented their research topics in just three minutes each. They had all previously taken part in the 3MT® (Three Minute Thesis) competition.

The doctoral researchers and their research topics include: 

  • Eoghan Mulholland, from the School of Pharmacy at Queen’s University Belfast – ‘A New ‘Spin’ in Chronic Wound Care: Delivering miR-31 via Nanofibres’
  • Carol Rhonda Burns, from the School of Psychology at Ulster University – ‘#MeToo: Male Victims of Polyvictimisation’
  • Kathryn Hamilton, from the School of Mathematics and Physics at Queen’s University Belfast – ‘Electrons under Inspection’
  • Medbh Hillyard, from the School of Nursing at Ulster University – ‘Gestational Diabetes in Pregnancy’
  • Gift Sotonye-Frank, from the School of Law at Queen’s University Belfast – ‘Pushed Out: Gender Stereotypes and the Exclusion of Pregnant School Girls’
  • Matt Milliken, from the School of Education at Ulster University – ‘ Teaching Across the Divide’
  • Mustapha Obalanlege, from the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Queen’s University Belfast – ‘Harnessing the Sun’
  • Temilola Olanrewaju, from the School of Geography and Environmental Sciences at Ulster University – ‘Filter Feeding: Speed Dating for Waterborne Superbugs’.
