Overview

This workshop will help you develop a strategy for communicating your research. It will look at the classic academic forms of communication – publishing articles/books and presenting at conferences and how to use these effectively. The workshop will also look at how to communicate the impact of your research to a non-academic audience. This will include the traditional media, new media and community engagement activities. At the end of the workshop, you will draw up your own communication strategy.

Content

The topics covered will include:

  1. Traditional academic outputs - papers - books
  2. Being a productive writer - tips and strategies for effective writing
  3. Conferences - making good use of conferences - presenting with confidence
  4. Non-academic communication - the range of options - newspapers, radio, TV - professional journals - new media, blogs, twitter, ResearchGate - community engagement activities
  5. Your communication strategy.

Facilitator 

Hugh Kearns

Hugh Kearns is recognised internationally as a public speaker, educator and researcher. He regularly lectures at universities across the world including at Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Berkeley and Stanford. His areas of expertise include self-management, positive psychology, work-life balance, learning and creativity. He draws on over twenty-five years of experience as a leading training and development professional within the corporate, financial, education and health sectors in Ireland, Scotland, North America, New Zealand and Australia. He has coached individuals, teams and executives in a wide range of organisations in the public and private sectors and has written 12 books on these topics.

Hugh is passionate about supervision and delivers workshops on this topic to students and supervisors. He co-wrote the book "Supervising PhD Students: A practical guide and toolkit".
