The European Association of Archaeologists (EAA) annual conference is taking place at Queen’s University Belfast from 30 August to 2 September 2023. To share the excitement as broadly as possible we are running a Festival of Archaeology in the week leading up to the conference. The Festival is being organised by Queen’s University Belfast in partnership with the Historic Environment Division of the Department for Communities and the Ulster Museum.

A series of archaeology-related films will run in the QFT from Friday 25 to Monday 28 August inclusive. Each of these will be introduced by an archaeologist who will set the context - european association of archaeologists festival of archaeology | Film Seasons at Queen's Film Theatre | Queen's Film Theatre (queensfilmtheatre.com).

On Saturday 26 August the Festival events will take place in the Ulster Museum and tours of the galleries will provide an insight into the archaeology collections held at the Ulster Museum. The tours are free but booking is essential and further details are available here –  Archaeology Gallery Tour | Ulster Museum.

On Sunday 27 August, between 10am and 4pm, the Festival activities will focus in the South Dining Hall and environs at Queen’s University Belfast. Participants will have the chance to engage with a wide range of local heritage stakeholders; have a go at a variety of experimental archaeological activities, including flint knapping, pottery making and basketry; and meet living history actors who will tell them all about life in Medieval Ireland. There will be lots of fun and games and the event is suitable for individuals of all ages. The activities are all free and no booking is required.
