Event Overview
Developing supervisory experience is an important step for many postdoctoral researchers considering an academic career. The UK Council for Graduate Education (UKCGE) Research Supervisor Recognition Programme provides a nationally recognised Good Supervisory Practice Framework for evidencing and reflecting on your doctoral supervision experience.
This session will focus on the Associate recognition level, designed for researchers who contribute to supervision but are not yet the primary supervisor.
We will be joined by Professor Marie Coleman, Professor of Twentieth Century Irish History in the School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics at Queen’s who is a UKCGE Recognised Research Supervisor. Having completed the programme and now serving as an assessor for the scheme, Professor Coleman will share her experience of the programme and offer insights into the Associate-level application process from an assessor’s perspective.
The session will also briefly highlight other opportunities available at Queen’s to develop supervision skills, including the Assistant Supervisor scheme.
In this session, we will cover:
- What the UKCGE Research Supervisor Recognition Programme is and who it is for
- What the Associate recognition level involves
- Insights and advice from someone who has completed the programme and now assesses applications
- Opportunities at Queen’s to gain and develop doctoral supervision experience
There will be time for questions at the end of the session.
This information session is aimed primarily at postdoctoral researchers and research staff; however, all are welcome to attend.

The 'Postdoc Life' Series
The 'Postdoc Life' series of information sessions aims at highlighting some of the internal and sector developments and initiatives to postdocs and research staff, in order to help them better understand and navigate their direct (Queen's) and wider (UK Research and Innovation sector) environment.
Sessions are organised several times per year, with topics informed by the PDC Representatives' Network. All postdocs and research staff can suggest future topics by contacting the PDC (pdc@qub.ac.uk) or their local representative.
