Sporty siblings graduate with same Structural Engineering degree

Gerard Treanor and his sister Niamh Treanor are celebrating today (Saturday 29 June) as they both graduate from Queen’s with Master’s degrees in Structural Engineering with Architecture.

Gerard Treanor and his sister Niamh Treanor are celebrating today (Saturday 29 June) as they both graduate from Queen’s University Belfast with Master’s degrees in Structural Engineering with Architecture.

The siblings, from County Monaghan, have both had an interest in construction from a young age, which led them to go on to study the same degree in Structural Engineering at Queen’s.

Gerard was a direct entry student into the second year of the BEng Civil Engineering degree, following completion of a foundation degree in Civil Engineering at a Further and Higher Education College. He was then subsequently accepted onto the Structural Engineering with Architecture Master’s program. Niamh entered directly into first year as an Undergraduate student, which is how the siblings, who were born 18 months apart, found themselves in the same class for the past three years.

Speaking about his time at Queen’s, Gerard said: “I really enjoyed the design and structures modules in the early stages of the degree, leading me to pursue a Master’s in Structural Engineering.

“A career in construction engineering has always appealed to me and I would like to thank the School of the Natural and Built Environment for guiding me over the last few years. I would also like to thank my family for their tremendous support. My father, also a graduate of Civil Engineering from Queens, has an inspirational work ethic that inspired us through the challenges of our academic years.”

Gerard and Niamh have also been actively involved in sport throughout their time at Queen’s.

Niamh has been a member of several O'Connor Cup campaigns with the ladies Gaelic Football 1st team, while also being a member of Queen’s Sport Academy.

Gerard was a member of Queen’s Sport Academy in 2017/18 while playing for the 1stXV rugby team. He was then ultimately selected to represent the 'Irish Universities Rugby Union' in an international match against Scottish students in 2018.

Following graduation Niamh will be taking up a role at structural engineering practice DesignID in County Down. Gerard will join the product development team at Kingspan Century.
