Professor Peter Robertson

Professor of Energy and Environmental Engineering

School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering

Professor Robertson is an Energy and Environmental Engineer with expertise in advanced technologies for water sustainability and solar energy generation/storage.

Peter Robertson has had a significant impact in water and energy sustainability through his internationally leading research on photocatalytic technology. The reason for his impact is his ability to work at the interface of a broad range of disciplines, including chemistry, chemical engineering, microbiology and materials science. Prof Robertson pioneered photocatalytic engineering research for both energy and water sustainability. His work encompasses basic research on photocatalysis that extends to pilot process development for water treatment, as well as solar energy conversion/ storage. This technology has been used for water treatment applications including removal of toxins generated from blue green algae, herbicides and pesticides and pathogenic bacteria. He has also developed processes for solar light driven generation of hydrogen from water and through valorisation of waste materials from bioenergy.

Fields
Energy Environment Sustainability
Areas of Expertise

Water sustainability, waste and potable water treatment. Renewable/sustainable energy, including solar energy and solar fuel generation such as renewable hydrogen. Technology for net zero engineering.

Media Experience

While Pro-Vice-Chancellor at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, Prof Robertson undertook media training, run by Kirsten Gove, formerly STV, including television (studio and OB) and radio interviews. Prof Robertson has given a number of interviews to broadcast and print media about university related issues and his own research.

In a personal capacity, he has also participated in media promotion for Blood Cancer UK and Friends of the Cancer Centre including featuring in corporate publications, online and social media.
