Exploring Belfast Through the Eyes of an International Student
Cancer Medicine student Tista discusses her first few weeks as an international student in Belfast.
As a master’s student in research in Cancer Medicine at Queen’s University, I understand how difficult it is to choose where to continue your studies. I wanted a place that would not only give me a degree but also help me grow as a person and a researcher. That is where Queen’s University Belfast struck me. It is one of the top 200 global universities (QS and THE World University Rankings 2026), known for its reputation and innovation.
Being passionate about advancing my career in oncology and research, I was attracted to Queen’s cutting-edge medical and life sciences research, its international collaborations, and its strong emphasis on innovation. My course aligned perfectly with my ambitions and provided access to expert faculty, advanced equipment, and a vibrant academic environment that encouraged curiosity.

My Journey to Belfast and Experience in the First Few Weeks
My journey to Belfast was filled with mixed emotions - leaving my parents and entire life behind, coming to an unknown country, and wondering how I would adapt to the teachers, people, academic curriculum and culture. But Queen's has made the transition smoother than I could ever imagine. From the moment I was selected, they conveyed all details clearly, from welcoming us at the airport to guiding international students through orientation, campus tours, and introducing us to the fabulous Students' Union (SU), as well as clubs and societies.
Orientation and Freshers’ Week were a whirlwind of excitement. Every day felt like a new beginning. There were brunches that felt like family gatherings, induction events where we met the Vice Chancellor, and an inspiring talk session with student ambassadors who shared their journeys.
There was also a three-day fair for clubs and societies with over 200 societies at Queen's. Whatever your hobby is, you will find it here. The Freshers’ theme event, ‘Rodeo and Ravers,’ was bombastic, and beyond that, we explored libraries, campus stores, and even had a tour around Belfast. For me, the highlight of the week was discovering the city.

Looking back, that week was a beautiful mix of fun, laughter, nervousness, and discovery. It made me feel that I belonged to this place from the very beginning and was never a stranger.
Why You Should Choose Queen’s University Belfast
Queen's is one of the world’s top 200 universities with a reputation for excellence. For me, choosing where to study was never easy, but Queen's stood out not only for its academic excellence but also for its focus on research and student growth.
Belfast itself makes Queen's even more attractive. It is one of the most affordable cities in the UK, perfect for international students managing their budget. There are discounts, affordable housing, and plenty of part-time job opportunities. The city is cosy, walkable, and easy to navigate, making it welcoming for students.
Cultural life in Belfast is lively and diverse. The Ulster Hall and Grand Opera House host world-class performances, while pubs and clubs offer opportunities to enjoy music from rock to jazz and classical. Belfast is filled with charming streets, historical landmarks, and attractions like the Titanic Belfast Museum, Giant's Causeway, Belfast Castle, Ulster Museum, Botanic Gardens, and Game of Thrones filming sites.

Advice for International Students
If you are an international student thinking of coming to Queen's, my biggest advice is do not be afraid to take the step. Belfast is one of the most beautiful and welcoming cities for international students, with a vibrant atmosphere that celebrates diversity, from traditional festivals to exhibitions, there is always something happening. If you are worried about being alone and feeling left out, do not worry as everyone starts in the same situation. Take the first leap of faith, step out of your comfort zone, and you will form strong connections and friendships. I did the same and have built beautiful bonds.
Being one of the most affordable cities in the UK, managing your budget becomes easier here. Apart from affordable accommodations, student discounts, and part-time jobs, you can also enjoy life through cultural events, music, and lively weekends. Cultural life in Belfast is lively and diverse. The city’s walkable nature allows you to explore without putting a hole in your budget.
Things Every International Student Should Know Before Coming to Northern Ireland
Be prepared for the unpredictable weather - it changes too often. Always carry a robust umbrella, wrap yourself in layers, and invest in good waterproof clothing. Adjusting can be overwhelming at first, but do not miss the activities during the Freshers’ Week. Explore the libraries, get to know the 200+ clubs and societies, and take advantage of the support services that the SU offers, including academic help, financial advice, healthcare, and mental health support.
Finally, set up your local bank account and register with a GP as soon as you arrive. This will help you manage finances, minimise international transaction fees, and take proper care of your health.
Now when I think back to the nervous student stepping out of the airport on her first day, I can see how far I have come, and this city has already taught me a lot. Choosing Queen's was one of the wisest decisions I have ever made and if you are considering it too, my advice is, “Go for it, you won’t regret it!”
