What is the Management Society?

The Management Society aims to provide its members with invaluable opportunities which will help them make the most of student life; academically, professionally, and socially with enthralling events and opportunities which range from industry-leading guest speeches, networking events, updates on placements, internships, and graduate jobs, and a diverse range of social events.

Sounds intersting, tell me more...

I joined the Management Society in 2019 when I first joined Queen’s and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in it. In my first year at Queen's, the society held a mystery tour (like a pub crawl), as well as sorting out Management Society personalised crewnecks and of course one of the biggest events on the QUB calendar; the famous annual formal!

What role did you play in the society?

I became a Level 1 class representative for my Business Management course and helped out with the society 3 years ago. This included helping to sell formal tickets, distributing the crewneck orders, securing raffle prizes for the raffle we held at the February 2020 formal and helping with the transport to the Galgorm for the formal. I was also tasked with scanning everyone’s tickets on the bus and ensuring that enjoyed themselves on the journey to the Galgorm!

I have really enjoyed my time on the Management Society so much so that in 2020/21 I ran as the Social Media and Marketing Executive for the society. Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions and lockdowns last year, we didn’t get as many activities organised as we usually do but we did manage to put on a successful online ‘At The Races Night’ which everyone enjoyed!

Fast-forward to today, I’m still a member of the society and helping with this year’s social media posts and imagery for the Facebook and Instagram page. This includes helping create social posts, stories and infographics on Canva.

It has helped me that I’m currently on my placement year as a Marketing Assistant so creating infographics and social posting is now part of my job role so it’s like second nature to me now as I’ve gained some experience in this field whilst being on placement.

We also organised a White Lie’s night out at The Speakeasy which was another successful night and everyone enjoyed check out the footage of this on our Instagram @qubms2022!

Gaining valauble work experience while having loads of craic, where do I sign up?

You can sign up at the Fresher's Fair or you can get in touch with us via InstagramFacebook or email. You’re more than welcome to join and the membership fee is just £5.63. Being a member of the society also makes you eligible for discounted formal tickets! We plan so much for our annual formal and there’s always some free goodies on the night for everyone. This year it will be held at the four-star Europa Hotel in Belfast.

Joining a society is a really good way to get more out of university life and it’s a great way to meet new people and make friends. I’ve met people from other degree pathways that I otherwise wouldn’t have met if I wasn’t a member of the Management Society!

Georgia Thornton-Smith

BSc Business Management | Undergraduate Student | Belfast, UK

I am a 21 year-old from Belfast and I’m currently in my third year at QUB on placement with ICC Belfast. I have acquired Degree Plus from my work with the Management Society at Queen’s and my work with the Pathway Opportunity Programme. When I was completing my A-Levels I was a Pathway student myself and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It helped me get my place at Queen’s University! I’m one of the first in my family to attend university so this programme really helped prepare me for what life at university was going to be like. I have many interests which include going to the cinema and travelling. I’m trying to get as many city breaks in this year as possible, before returning to university for my final year in September 2022.
