A Week in the Life of an MSc Marketing Student

Embarking on a Master of Science in Marketing is a thrilling journey that combines rigorous academic pursuits with real-world practical applications. Rosa summarises what a typical week looks like for an MSc Marketing student.

A week in the life of an MSc Marketing student typically involves lectures, workshops, group projects, and personal growth. In this blog I will delve into the standard routine of a student like me, exploring how the course is structured, presenting a sample timetable, and revealing the cherished moments of weekend relaxation.

Monday

The weekend has ended abruptly, to the rude awakening of Monday morning. In both of my semesters, I had an early Monday class in Riddel Hall, so Monday typically began very early to give myself time to travel up, usually via train or bus. The journey usually takes half an hour both ways, so an hour out of each day is usually spent travelling. This gave me some time to chill out, listen to some music, and prepare for the day ahead.

Time after class consisted of more studying or meeting friends for lunch or coffee, before heading home. I typically had the intention of going home to do more study or exercise, but as may be the case for many people, Monday tiredness generally took over and I usually ended up having an early night instead!

Tuesday-Thursday

The next three days of the week pose many similarities with mid-day classes and lots of work to keep me occupied in between classes and at home. Throughout my studies my midweek classes consisted of topics such as Marketing Management, Marketing Analytics, Research Methods, and more. I usually tried to make it to Belfast early on those days, so I could be more productive than I was on Monday and spend some time in the library!

At the peak of submission season, I would spend much of my time balancing different assignments and distributing my time between each piece of work to ensure a suitable amount of time was spent on each. This was something that came as a surprise as during my undergraduate degree, I did not spend as much time balancing several assignments, but during a short MSc, I noticed that it was more work, less time!

Friday

Finally, Friday has arrived and there is a short break for the weekend. During my second semester, I did not typically have class on a Friday, which was great to have a long weekend, but throughout my first few months at the university, I had a class every Friday morning, which typically consisted of a class based on Strategic Marketing where I would learn skills such as segmentation, positioning, strategic planning and more.

Having an early start gave me the luxury of getting to go home early to beat rush hour traffic. I typically had a couple of hours to kill where I would study and meet up with some friends for coffee.

Saturday/Sunday

The weekends provide a valuable opportunity to relax and have some time to yourself after a busy week of studying, travelling and numerous classes. However, during each semester, I made sure to have a flexible mix of work and play during the weekends, to prevent getting overwhelmed with assignments during the week. For example, getting up a little earlier on a Saturday to get some valuable work done.

Sunday poses a great opportunity to reflect on the week ahead and set some goals. For example, what things did you succeed in this week, and what could you improve on in the next?
