Why I chose Queen's and my course

I chose Queen’s University Belfast because I wanted to truly challenge myself, both academically and personally. I was aware of the University’s esteemed reputation and the high quality associated with its degrees, which immediately drew me in. I knew that the level of study would be meticulous, demanding, and at times intense, but I also believed it would be empowering and deeply motivating.

Choosing Queen’s was a conscious decision to push myself beyond my comfort zone and to demonstrate qualities that matter to me: tenacity, ambition, and drive. I wanted to be part of an institution that would encourage me to grow, question, and develop into a stronger professional.

My course is a Postgraduate Taught Master’s in Inclusion and Special Educational Needs (MEd). From a young age, all I ever wanted to be was a teacher. Education has always been a passion of mine, particularly the belief that every child deserves equal opportunities to learn, thrive, and feel included. As I already hold a postgraduate qualification in Education, I encouraged myself to take the next step and further specialise in this area.

What is it like to study at a Russell Group university?

This course allows me to deepen my understanding of inclusion, diversity, and special educational needs, while equipping me with the knowledge and skills needed to make a meaningful impact in educational settings.

During my postgraduate studies, I also had the opportunity to serve as Class President, a role that allowed me to represent my peers, collaborate closely with academic staff, and further develop my leadership and communication skills. In addition, I chose to become a Queen’s University Student Brand Ambassador, an experience that has been incredibly rewarding and is what provided me with this amazing opportunity to share my journey through this blog.

My student life at Queen's

Student life at Queen’s has also been a highlight of my experience. Belfast is a vibrant city with so much to offer students. For anyone coming from the Republic of Ireland, shopping in Penneys (Primark) is an absolute must. Victoria Square is another favourite spot; taking the lift up to The Dome provides stunning views of the Belfast skyline, Belfast City, and the iconic Albert Clock.

Beyond the city, there are incredible places to explore such as the Giant’s Causeway, Belfast Castle, Belfast Zoo, and Titanic Belfast, all of which make studying here even more enjoyable and memorable.

Tips for prospective students from ROI

For students from the Republic of Ireland considering Queen’s University Belfast, I would offer a few practical tips:

Applying for a National Insurance number as soon as possible is essential, especially if you plan to work. A National Insurance Number is NI’S Version of a PPS Number.

Opening a Monzo account is also very helpful, as it works well as a Northern Ireland bank account and can be managed easily through an app, similar to Revolut.

It is also important to get a Northern Irish SIM card and mobile data plan, as this makes everyday communication much easier and is often needed for work, banking, and online services.

Finally, keep in mind that many places do not open until 1pm on Sundays, so planning your food shop ahead of time is always a good idea.

My name is Ciara Murphy, I am a postgrad student in Queen's furthering my studies to enable me to become the best teacher I can be.

Coming to Queen's was a goal of mine and even on my first day when I was getting my student card, I had such a moment of "Wow, I can't believe I am here".

I hope this blog helps anyone coming from ROI to NI, I would advise getting your NIN, NI Sim and Monzo account asap and that will have you set up and finding your feet a lot quicker than you know.
