A Day in the Life of a Marketing Student at Queen's
MSc Marketing student Wahab provides a glimpse into a typical day as a Queen's student in Belfast, from a post-lecture coffee fix in the Business School to scenic walks through Botanic Gardens.
As an international student studying Marketing at Queen’s University Belfast, living in Elms BT1, each day feels like a new chapter - sometimes a well-planned one, sometimes a bit spontaneous. From trying to make it to morning lectures on time (we all struggle with that, don’t we?) to grabbing a last-minute coffee on the way, my daily routine is a mix of structure and small surprises.
Whether it's finding the quietest corner of the library, chasing deadlines, or discovering new lunch spots around campus, life as a Marketing student here is far more than just lectures and textbooks - it's about learning how to balance academics with everything else Queen’s and Belfast have to offer.
Starting the Day: Packed Bags and Patchy Skies
Each morning begins with a simple routine: pack my bag with the essentials - laptop, notepad, pens, and of course, an umbrella. Because here in Belfast, there's a local saying that there are seven types of rain: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday...it's fair to say that keeping an umbrella handy is more of a survival skill than a choice.
Elms BT1 is just a short 3-minute walk to the Europa Bus Centre, where I catch the 8d bus to Riddel Hall, Queen’s Business School. One thing I learned quickly (after getting it wrong) is that only the 8a and 8d buses go to Riddel Hall. Many new students, like I did, mistakenly take the 8b, which heads elsewhere.

Riddel Hall, Lectures and Coffee
Riddel Hall is one of the most scenic parts of the Queen’s campus. Walking through its green spaces in the morning instantly puts you in the right mindset for the day ahead. Between classes, I often stop at the Business and Beans Café for a cappuccino or hot chocolate, and one of their Mediterranean sandwiches. (Pro tip: don’t forget to collect stamps on your loyalty card - your ninth drink is free!)
Lectures held in the Harvard theatre are particularly engaging and are one of the academic highlights of my week. They offer an interactive and professional atmosphere that helps bring our coursework to life.

Study Sessions, Libraries, and Lunchtime Picks
After lectures, I often head with friends to the Students' Union to catch up on assignments or just plan out the week ahead. The view of the iconic Lanyon Building from the Students' Union stairs is worth a quick photo every time. Just behind it sits the McClay Library, where I spend a couple of hours revising, reading articles, or prepping for upcoming deadlines.
Lunchtime usually means heading to either the Delish, which serves halal options, or over to the Junction Café in the Law School for one of their sandwiches. Queen’s also ensures there are vegetarian and vegan options available, which makes it easier to find something for every preference.

If the weather holds up, I sometimes take a break in Botanic Gardens, which is located right beside the library. It’s a peaceful green space that adds a refreshing, natural vibe to your day - perfect for clearing your mind between study sessions. Ulster Museum is also located within the Botanic Gardens where you can explore everything from art and history to science and natural wonders - worth a visit when you need a break from the books.

Way back and Groceries
Once my day at university wraps up, I usually walk back to my Elms BT1 accommodation - it takes around 20 minutes and offers a chance to unwind. On the way, I often stop by Asian supermarkets to pick up groceries, including halal meat and traditional spices that remind me of home.
Evening Routine: Fitness, Friends, and Free Time
Afternoons often begin with a quick rest, followed by a session at the BT1 gym, which is conveniently located inside the accommodation. It’s well-equipped and even has wee vending machines for a quick energy boost before a workout.
Later in the evening, I sometimes stroll over to Belfast City Hall, located just behind my accommodation. Living in the city centre makes these short trips easy and spontaneous - it’s one of the reasons I chose BT1 in the first place.

The common room at BT1 is a great social space, regularly hosting events that help students connect. Whether it’s attending any event, playing FIFA on the PlayStation, or challenging friends to a game of pool, there’s always something happening to help you unwind and recharge.
Winding Down: Dinner and Study Time
Dinner is usually something simple I cook myself - I’ll admit, I’m a bit of a foodie, but not exactly a perfect chef. But when the weekend rolls around, I like to treat myself to a meal out in the city. Belfast has a great mix of food spots, and I can personally vouch for places like Nora’s Palace, Layalina, Pepe’s, and Darmisk Grill - perfect if you're craving something hearty, flavourful, and halal-friendly. There are also plenty of vegan and vegetarian options available across the city, so no matter your dietary preference, you’re covered. Whether it’s a shawarma wrap, veggie bowl, or peri-peri chicken, there’s something for everyone.
Evenings usually end with a study session where I review lecture notes, catch up on readings, and work on assignments. I often head to the quiet study room in Elms BT1 accommodation, which is a great space to focus without distractions. It’s a calm and productive way to wrap up the day and stay on top of everything academically.

Final Thoughts
Being a Marketing student at Queen’s means balancing coursework with student life, friendships, and everything in between. From scenic walks across campus to spontaneous chats in the Students' Union, every day brings something memorable. Whether you're enjoying the peace of McClay Library or getting caught in one of Belfast’s “seven types of rain,” you’ll find that it’s all part of an exciting and enriching experience.
And somewhere between lectures, laughter, and late-night study sessions, I’ve found something special - a sense of belonging. A home, away from home.
