Queen’s and British University in Egypt Collaborate on UK-Egypt Education Initiative
Two staff from the School of Natural and Built Environment - Dr Faris Elghaish and Dr Tara Brooks - recently travelled to Cairo to collaborate with academic colleagues at the British University in Egypt (BUE).

This visit formed part of a British Council-funded Transnational Education (TNE) project aimed at strengthening academic links between the UK and Egypt.
Sharing best practice
Working closely with Dr Ahmed Gouda and Dr Ahmed Daoud from BUE, the collaboration focused on the exchange of pedagogical approaches and research methodologies, with a particular emphasis on emerging digital technologies in construction education. Through a series of meetings, seminars, and practical demonstrations, the academics shared best practices and explored opportunities for curriculum innovation and joint research.
As part of the visit, Dr Tara Brooks also delivered a workshop that addressed the barriers faced by women in the construction industry. The session provided a platform for female students and professionals to discuss challenges, share experiences, and explore the role of mentoring in advancing gender equity in the sector.
In the next phase of the collaboration, Drs Gouda and Daoud will travel to Belfast in late June. During their visit, they will participate in a tailored workshop aimed at supporting their department’s journey toward Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) accreditation. Additionally, they will attend a major digital construction event at Elmwood Hall on June 26, featuring a series of talks from invited guest speakers.
