You will undertake 3 modules over the course of approx. 6 months, all of which are focused on the nursing care of older person, and which will improve your skills and knowledge base, enabling you to improve the quality of care you provide to residents

Candidates must normally hold a professional qualification. Note: Some modules require a specific professional qualification. See Selection Criteria for full requirements.

The Programme

  • Course Content

    This short course comprises three 20 credit modules:

    • SPR3090: Frailty, Rehabilitation and Reablement
    • SPR3088: Health & Wellbeing in Later Life 
    • SPR3089: Nursing Care of Older People

    Modules focus on the living experience of older people, highlighting the need to respect the resident, in relation to diversity, values, beliefs and expectations about their health and care. Frailty, Rehabilitation & Reablement focuses on the rehabilitative principles of care for older people.  The module emphasises the need for a comprehensive multi-disciplinary approach to assessing the needs of older people, recognising the role of multiple providers of health and social care across the public, voluntary and community, and private sectors. The final module, Nursing Care of Older People, provides students with the opportunity to develop clinical competencies utilising a holistic and compassionate response to the multiple problems older people may experience, for example heart failure, COPD, dementia, cancer, diabetes and other complex conditions that older people experience.



  • Outcomes

    The course will provide students with advanced knowledge and specialist clinical skills in the practice of nursing older peopleThose completing the programme will gain key, transferable and specialist skills to optimise the care of residents living in care homes.  

  • Delivery

    The course will be delivered in a blended format, with face-to-face timetabled classes, live online lectures delivered via MS Teams and self-directed activities.  Assessments will be a combination of assignments and exams.

    Autumn (AUT) teaching commences w/c Monday, 16 September 2024 (Week 1) and finishes w/c 2 December 2024 unless otherwise advised.

    Spring (SPR) teaching commences w/c Monday, 13 January 2025 (Week 18) and finishes w/c 31 March 2025 unless otherwise advised.

  • Selection Criteria

    All applicants MUST be a registered nurse with the NMC and currently working in the care home sector within Northern Ireland. 

    Applicants must hold at least a Diploma in Higher Education or 120 CAT points at level 2 (diploma level) for entry to Level 3 (degree level) study. Applicants who do not meet the entry requirements should contact the School for advice.

    International Trained Nurses/Midwives: If you hold an international qualification you will need to provide a UK ENIC Statement of Comparability. This should be obtained prior to submitting your application. You can apply for a statement through the ENIC website:  Statement of Comparability (enic.org.uk)  

    All candidates MUST gain the support and consent of their line manager to enable them to attend the full programme (and mandatory face-to-face classes).

Gary is a registered nurse with significant practice and research experience within the care home sectorHe occupies the role of chair for the RCN Older People's Forum and also holds the title of QN in recognition of his contribution to nursing practice, education and research in the field of care home nursing.
