Programme Specific Regulations

Programme Structure, Levels, Modules and Credits

To qualify for the Master of Science in Caring for Children and Young People with Complex Health Needs, students must take and pass modules worth 120 CATS points and a dissertation worth 60 CATS points [180 CATS points total]. Students may also exit with a Postgraduate Diploma in Caring for Children and Young People with Complex Health Needs by successfully completing 120 CATS points from the taught pathway modules.

The MSc consists of taught modules of study and a dissertation. Students must successfully take and pass a total of seven to nine taught modules (120 CATS points), including: two compulsory cross-programme modules, two compulsory programme-specific modules; one compulsory research module and two to four optional modules that may be selected either from the cross programme modules or programme-specific modules (see list of modules, below) and a dissertation (60 CATS points).

Successful completion of all taught module requirements [120 CATS] is essential before students can proceed to the Dissertation element of the MSc.

Awards, Credits and Progression of Learning Outcomes.

Examinations

Students must pass 120 CATS points of taught modules, including all compulsory modules on the programme, and complete a Dissertation (60 CATS points) to be eligible for the award of a Master of Science in Caring for Children and Young People with Complex Health Needs.

The pass mark for all taught modules and the dissertation is 50%.

Students who fail one or more taught modules are permitted one further attempt to pass at the next available opportunity for a maximum mark of 50%.

The dissertation must be submitted within a period of no more than two years after completion of the taught modules.

The school permits one attempt at dissertation resit for a maximum mark of 50%.

The degree will be classified in accordance with the University General Regulations, Study Regulations, Mark Scales.

Candidates who pass all the taught modules, including all compulsory modules, but who fail to achieve a mark of at least 50% in the dissertation shall be eligible for the award of Postgraduate Diploma in Caring for Children and Young People with Complex Health Needs.

Candidates who pass all the taught modules, including all compulsory modules, but who fail to submit a dissertation shall be eligible for the award of Postgraduate Diploma in Caring for Children and Young People with Complex Health Needs.

For Master’s Degrees, a pass with distinction will be awarded only when the following three conditions have been satisfied: an overall average of 70+ is achieved and a mark of 70+ is achieved in the dissertation module and an average of 65+ is achieved in the other modules.

The overall aim of the MSc in Caring for Children and Young People with Complex Health Needs is to offer high quality supportive teaching and learning environments that provide graduates with:

1. Skills necessary to promote and sustain innovative and emerging practice.

2. Intellectual and transferable skills necessary to function in positions of leadership and caring for children and young people with complex health needs.
