Programme Specific Regulations

The PG Diploma in Innovation Management will be subject to the regulations presented in the Study Regulations for Postgraduate Taught Programmes. Students must pass all taught modules (120 CATS) of the programme to be eligible for the award of a PG Diplomas. Students are eligible for the award of a PG Certificate if they have passed 60 CATs.

Educational Aims Of Programme

The overall aim of the programme is to provide an academically stimulating and professionally challenging programme for students in the area of innovation management. Through the programme, students will be given opportunities to develop skills and knowledge that will help to develop and enhance their personal competencies.
The Pg Dip in Innovation Management aims to:

•provide students with opportunities to discuss, evaluate and critique theory and practice in relation to innovation management within a local and global environment
•encourage students to make informed decisions by creatively and systematically applying their knowledge and understanding of innovation topics to contemporary and emerging issues
•develop students’ ability to analyse complex innovation management situations, challenges, opportunities and problems critically, rationally and rigorously
•encourage critical thinking, independent enquiry, and an international outlook
•develop students' skills base, leadership capacity, and connections with practice in ways which will enhance their ability to make valuable contributions to the economy and society
•promote engagement with issues of ethics, responsibility and sustainability, and maintain respect for social and cultural differences and openness, fairness, and equality of opportunity

On the completion of this course successful students will be able to:

Teaching/Learning Methods and Strategies

A variety of teaching and learning methods are used throughout the modules including lecture, simulation, national and international case studies, and directed reading. Teaching methods focus on problem-solving and the analysis of real-world problems

Methods of Assessment

Student’s problem-solving skills will be tested throughout the course. A variety of assessment methods are used including individual and group coursework, and presentations. Both formative and summative methods are used

Conduct independent learning and enquiry

Teaching/Learning Methods and Strategies

Students will be expected to solve complex problems using both the material taught and through the materials that they have learned independently.

Specifically, students will be guided in how to find and analyse other sources of information (e.g. books, journal articles). Students will also learn how to solve problems independently through the use of online resources.
Students will also be provided with suggestions for further reading and learning, which they can draw on to enhance their skills and employability.

Most of the assessments will require students to conduct independent inquiry.

Critical evaluation and interpretation and creativity

Students will learn to critically evaluate theories, research findings, analytical tools, and best practices.

Methods of Assessment

Students will be required to reflect on their skills and abilities throughout the course and will be encouraged to work on any gaps in their business skills through both the core course material and self-directed learning. Students will also be required to reflect on their learning during other modules.

Teaching/Learning Methods and Strategies

Students will learn to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses, which will feed into their motivation for self-learning. The course will overview many tools and techniques, and not all in detail – students can take this knowledge to engage in self-directed learning.

Students will be required to reflect on their skills and abilities throughout the course and will be encouraged to work on any gaps in their business skills through both the core course material and self-directed learning. Students will also be required to reflect on their learning during other modules.

Explain and evaluate the process, practice, performance and skills for innovation management.

Teaching/Learning Methods and Strategies

The modules focus on introducing the skills and best practices for enhancing innovation, especially in the SMEs using case studies.

Methods of Assessment

Students will be required to demonstrate their understanding through a range of assessment methods including written assignments, presentations, and group projects.

Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the theoretical and conceptual underpinnings of innovation.

Teaching/Learning Methods and Strategies

The programme draws on contemporary thinking in innovation management.
A deep understanding of the conceptual underpinnings is initially facilitated through directed reading of academic journals, high quality practitioner opinion pieces and then forms the basis for more detailed discussion in workshops and small group session.

This is formally assessed in various modules, including, for example, design for innovation and innovator’s tool box.
Both formative (in feedback sessions for presentations) and summative assessment is used to assess all elements of knowledge and understanding.

Evaluate and apply advanced innovation management theories and techniques for sustainable development.

Students will be challenged throughout the course to think about sustainability and sustainable development using innovation management.

Students will have the opportunity to discuss sustainability in the mandatory modules

Students will be required to demonstrate the application of innovation management techniques in sustainable development through assignments .

Evaluate and apply innovation management theories and techniques and skills for developing sustainable competitive advantages

Advanced theories and tools and techniques for managing innovation processes will be covered in the program.

Students’ understandings of developing competitive advantages via innovation management will be assessed through assignments.

Students’ acquisition of core knowledge is achieved primarily through the lecture, workshop and small group discussions. Case study analysis is also used.
A business simulation

Individual coaching and reflection sessions are used to provide formative feedback to students in relation to their innovation decision making.

Students will be challenged to evaluate current methods and best practices in innovation management through national and international case studies of leading companies. This will be embedded throughout the mandatory modules.

This will be assessed throughout the modules through individual and group assignments.

Critically evaluate the role of innovation management within organisations, and in particular its role in strategic planning

This is embedded particularly in the modules on strategic change leadership and key management challenges.
Students should also consider the role of innovation management in an organization’s strategic planning and sustainable development.

Assignments will challenge students to frame solutions in the context of sustainable development.

Innovation management performance, process and practice will be explored in the mandatory modules. Students will work with real-world cases to enhance management in these modules.

The ability to source, analyse and critique and then apply a range of relevant, contemporary, and high quality academic literature relating to innovation management.

Directed reading of academic journal articles and high quality practitioner opinion pieces are made available to the students in advance of each taught session.
These will then be drawn upon, discussed and applied in a range of settings throughout the modules.

At least one assessment element in each module requires the students to be able to integrate an extensive range of literature into their work, irrespective of whether this is a presentation, case study analysis or a more traditional academic essay.

Taught modules will incorporate a blended approach to learning and make heavy use of ICT; videos, blogs, guest speakers, narrated Powerpoints will be used. As the delivery is designed, largely, in workshop blocks, students will have access to a range of materials well in advance of each block delivery.
Students will have opportunities to use a range of ICT packages, including business simulation, and data analysis tools.

All assessments, to a greater or lesser extent draw on a wide range of ICT skills and software.
