Entrance Qualifications:

Applicants must have a recognised professional qualification in nursing, midwifery or allied health and social care service. They shall normally hold a relevant primary Degree at 2:2 classification or above or equivalent. In line with the University RPL procedures, candidates who do not meet the above academic requirements will be considered on an individual basis where there is evidence of experience in a relevant area.

Additional Information for International Students: Applicants whose first language is not English are normally required to have an IELTS score of 6.5, with not less than 5.5 in any component, or an equivalent recognised qualification; evidence of these qualifications must be presented before an offer of admission is issued.

Additional Relevant Information

Full-time students must normally complete the MSc within two years of first registration. The School may grant an extension of time so that the MSc is completed within three years of the date of first registration. In exceptional circumstances an extension beyond four years may be allowed. Full-time students cannot complete the MSc within one year of the date of first registration, and cannot undertake more than 6 taught modules per academic year.

Part-time students must normally complete the MSc within five years of first registration. The School may grant an extension of time so that the MSc is completed within six years of the date of first registration. In exceptional circumstances an extension beyond the sixth year may be allowed. A part-time student may not complete the MSc within two years of the date of first registration, and cannot undertake more than three taught modules per academic year.

Examinations

Students must pass 120 CATS points of taught modules on the programme and complete a Dissertation (60 CATS points) to be eligible for the award of a Master of Science in Advanced Professional Practice.

The pass mark for all taught modules and the dissertation is 50%.

Students who fail one or more taught modules are permitted one further attempt to pass at the next available opportunity for a maximum mark of 50%.

The dissertation must be submitted within a period of no more than two years after completion of the taught modules.

There is normally no re-submission permitted for the individual dissertation.

The degree will be classified in accordance with the University General Regulations, Study Regulations, Mark Scales.

Candidates who pass all the taught modules but who fail to achieve a mark of at least 50% in the dissertation shall be eligible for the award of Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Professional Practice.

Candidates who pass all the taught modules but who fail to submit a dissertation shall be eligible for the award of Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Professional Practice.

For Master’s Degrees, a pass with distinction will be awarded only when the following three conditions have been satisfied; an overall average of 70+ is achieved and a mark of 70+ is achieved in the dissertation module and an average of 65+ is achieved in the other modules.

Where students have completed a School of Nursing and Midwifery, QUB postgraduate programme that leads to a Professional Award (for example: Post Grad Diploma Specialist Practice, Post Grad Cert Nurse Prescribing, Post Grad Cert Education) but have not accepted any academic accreditation, within two years they may take the option of transferring to the MSc programme.

Notes

To qualify for the Master of Science in Advanced Professional Practice students must take and pass modules worth 120 CATS points and a dissertation worth 60 CATS points [180 CATS points total].

The MSc consists of two discrete Stages (1 & 2) that comprise taught modules of study and a dissertation. Students must successfully take and pass a total of six taught modules (120 CATS points - stage 1), including: one compulsory research module* (NUR7010 OR NUR7002); two pathway specific modules** (choose two from NUR7024, NUR7027, SPR7055); and three optional modules that may be selected either from other specific pathways or the general pathways (see list of modules) and a dissertation (60 CATS points – stage 2).

Successful completion of all Stage 1 requirements [120 CATS] is essential before students can proceed to Stage 2: the Dissertation element of the MSc.

Please note that NMP7002 Health Assessment has an OSCE which is Pass/Fail.
