EDUCATIONAL AIMS OF PROGRAMME
• The programme is designed to provide students with an intellectual training in the disciplines of Philosophy and Politics which, while discrete subjects, are also complementary and mutually enriching.
• The combination of Philosophy and Politics allows for the development of an in-depth appreciation of the ideas that help to explain the foundations of the modern world, democracy and political stability.
• The analysis of what constitutes power has fascinated students of both subject areas.
• Through this joint degree in Philosophy and Politics students will encounter a common interest in theory, but they will also be encouraged to make connections between contemporary political debates and philosophical discourse.
• The unique selling point of the degree is not merely the range of choice in political theory and philosophy but the way in which the structure of the degree connects the core elements of both subjects with an understanding of political practices and behaviour, and development of political ideals and values.
• The programme is designed to equip students with a range of skills which together foster the ability to practise self-motivated learning and increase the capacity to undertake independent learning in a progressive way.
• Whilst certain skills are subject specific to each discipline, certain of them are mutually reinforcing, including the ability to evaluate critically primary and secondary sources, whilst others are designed to be transferable and thereby enhance the employability of students.
• By taking Philosophy and Politics modules together, students will have developed an understanding of the key concepts that are used to undertake political and philosophical analysis, and will be in a position to address major themes and approaches that are relevant to the understanding and assessment of politics and society.

Notes
In Philosophy students will take the following three core Philosophy modules PHL1001, PHL1003, PHL1004. In Politics students will take the following two core Politics modules PAI1009, PAI1007 plus one optional module from the list of optional modules.
Stage 3: Students will take three modules from Philosophy and three modules from Politics. Students may choose only one double-weighted Dissertation: either PHL3099 (Dissertation in Philosophy), PAI3099 (Dissertation in Politics) or PAI3097 (Internship in Politics) NB: Whereas there are no prescribed modules for the Joint Honours Programme in Philosophy and Politics, the choice of modules in both subject areas may be determined by the student’s personal interests and any prerequisites for those modules at Stage 2. As stated above, Joint Philosophy-Politics students wishing to do a double-weighted dissertation or internship module at Stage III can only choose one of these modules, and must pay particular attention to the prerequisites at Stage II.
Students will take three Philosophy modules and three Politics modules over the course of the whole academic year. The combinations for each semester might be 2 PHL modules + 1 PAI module, or 2 PHL modules and 1 PAI module. Students should pay particular attention to any Stage 2 pre-requisites that are required for Stage 3 modules (see Stage 3 list below) and elect their modules accordingly. The full list of modules for both Philosophy and Politics, and which semester they will be offered in, will vary from year to year. It is the student’s responsibility to acquire the most up to date information regarding module availability and the semester they will be offered in. In Philosophy, over the course of the academic year in Stage 2, students will take three PHL modules. In Politics, students must take the following two core Politics modules: PAI2005 and PAI2043 plus one module from the Optional list below (NB: this list of available optional modules, and the semester they will be offered in, will vary from year to year).
