Join us for an engaging conversation with Dr Julia Miskelly, Global Account Lead at Illumina who will reflect on her career to date and share insights into the opportunities and challenges she has encountered along the way.  This journey has led her to become an accomplished leader in Genomic Research and Biotechnology and a dedicated teacher and STEM ambassador who is passionate about inspiring future generations to make meaningful contributions to society through careers in science.

The session will include a live Q&A, offering attendees the opportunity to ask questions and seek advice from Julia.

This session is part of a series of career exploration interviews and panel discussions organised as part of the Research Culture NI project, generously funded by Wellcome.

Format

ALL WELCOME!  This event is primarily targeted at postdocs and research staff, but is open to anyone who is interested in attending, including individuals of all career stages and roles affiliated to any university or without university affiliation.

In this event Dr Julia Miskelly will be interviewed by Jill Wright, Research Careers and Employability Officer in the Postdoctoral Development Centre at Queen's University Belfast.  Jill will ask some prepared questions but also relay questions shared by the audience in the event chat and address any pre-event questions received at registration.

DR JULIA MISKELLY

Julia Miskelly is an accomplished leader in Genomic Research and Biotechnology.  As Global Strategic Account Manager at Illumina, she drives collaboration with leading pharmaceutical companies, academic institutions, and healthcare organisations worldwide to deliver cutting-edge Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) solutions.

Julia earned a First-Class BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry from the University of Dundee, followed by a PhD in gene regulation.  She went on to conduct postdoctoral research at Queen’s University Belfast (QUB), specialising in the transcriptional regulation of the BRCA1 gene and the application of NGS technologies.

Since 2010, Julia has been instrumental in advancing NGS capabilities in Northern Ireland.  She led NGS development at Almac Diagnostics before returning to QUB to establish and manage the Genomics Core Technology Unit (GCTU), supporting major initiatives including the COVID-19 Genomics UK Consortium and the European Reference Genome Atlas.

Recognised by UK Research and Innovation in “101 Jobs That Change the World,” Julia exemplifies scientific leadership and innovation.  Transitioning from research to strategy, she has built expertise in account strategy, negotiation, financial and contract management, and business partnership development, all underpinned by her passion for advancing health outcomes through science.
