The May 2025 special issue of Irish University Review was dedicated to exploring ‘Irish Studies beyond the Text’. We will be joined by the guest editors Emily Mark-FitzGerald and Emma Radley and contributor Daithí Kearney to discuss themes raised in the collection and the challenges these pose for interdisciplinary Irish Studies.
The special issue invited contributors to ‘make a mess’ of the boundaries of Irish Studies, seeking new work and perspectives that go ‘beyond the text’. In so doing, it featured not only contributions making innovative use of non-textual sources and/or methodologies; but also research on various cultural practices (visual, material, aural, emotional/sensory, embodied, multi-medial, etc.) which themselves disrupt assumptions about the nation and the epistemologies of ‘Irishness’ underpinning the field.
This seminar will be available in hybrid form, in-person and online via Teams. Please indicate your preference when registering.
