Upon arriving to Queen’s University Belfast from his native Hong Kong, Walter really appreciated the mentorship scheme which enabled him to settle in quickly to his new hometown of Belfast.
He commented: “The mentorship scheme was so invaluable to me as an international student arriving to Belfast and I’m proud that I was later elected to become lead mentor to new students, allowing me to give something back.”
In 2018, Walter received ‘Peer Mentor of the Year’ award recognising his commitment and support to new students.
Walter’s extra-curricular activities in supporting fellow students didn’t stop there. He initiated the first ever student-led event on global healthcare and pharmacy culture around the world. Seeking to inspire his fellow students to appreciate cultural diversity and consider work as a global citizen, Walter invited many international students as guest speakers to share information on the healthcare system in their own countries.
He also gained second place in the NI Healthcare Pharmacy Student Leadership Award 2019 for this work.
Walter is excited about what the future holds. He said: “I will be starting my position as a pre-registration pharmacist this summer and I look forward to working to improve the healthcare at both a local and global level.”
