The Centre for Inclusion, Transformation and Equality (CITE) hosted a seminar on 4 December 2025 examining poverty in Northern Ireland from both local and global perspectives. The event took place in the Lanyon Building and welcomed academic staff and postgraduate researchers from across the University.

The seminar was led by Professor Allen Thurston, who presented findings from a recent research report co-authored with Canan Ozkaya and Qurat Ul Ain, in collaboration with the Centre for Global Education. The research was funded by the Halifax Foundation’s Empower Fund and involved an extensive review of 662 published reports and studies on poverty in Northern Ireland.

Professor Thurston’s presentation also drew on comparative data from England, Scotland, Wales, the Republic of Ireland and the G12 countries, offering a broader international context. The seminar highlighted key patterns, challenges and inequalities, and considered what the findings mean for future research, policy development and practice.

The session concluded with discussion and questions, providing an opportunity for attendees to reflect on the research's implications and engage in cross-disciplinary dialogue on poverty and social inequality.
