Welcome to the People of the Ulster Plantation Database, a digital humanities research project that offers a new research tool for the study of 17th-century Ulster and its inhabitants.

The project was funded by the Royal Irish Academy via a Hunter Foundation grant. Beginning in early 2022, the project is hosted by the Institute of Irish Studies at Queens University Belfast, with technical assistance provided by Maynooth University’s Arts and Humanities Institute. The main aim of phase 1 of the project was to establish a user-friendly database populated with as many of the Ulster settler population as possible covering the period c.1609-1641. This has brought together and combined a wide selection of sources ranging from military musters and plantation grants to judicial records and secondary literature. Phase 2 (2024-6) has expanded the range and usability of the resources incorporated into the database. The Hunter Foundation was established in memory of the late Robert John (Bob) Hunter (1938-2007).
