Deciding to pursue PG study

As the year 2024 began, it also marked the end of my time as an undergraduate student. After three years of undergraduate education in India, I found myself in front of yet another crossroad: the decision on what to pursue further. I must admit it wasn't an easy choice, but even so, a part of me knew continuing my studies was what I always wanted to do.

A more profound knowledge in my chosen field of psychology, as well as the opportunity to develop skills enhancing my career prospects, are some of the main reasons why I decided to pursue PG study. Therefore, eager to learn and challenge myself, I packed my life once again into four medium-sized bags and travelled 4,522 miles to the city of Belfast

Why Queen's was always the ultimate choice

The decision on where to study was certainly not easy, but doing my own research on the universities in the UK and the courses they provide helped me make an informed choice. Through my search, I learned about Queen's and the values the institution upholds, which really stuck with me. The course I am currently studying has a variety of modules spanning two semesters. These include but are not limited to: Health Behaviour Change, Applied Research, Psycho-oncology, and more.

All the topics covered are well-rounded and taught by outstanding faculty who are at the core of research in their respective fields. The lectures taught are interactive and encourage discussions among students within the classrooms. These crucial factors motivated me to choose Queen's over other universities.

Belfast becomes my second home

As someone who was brought up away from my place of birth and has lived in cities with a variety of cultures, Belfast, even before I entered the city, felt like home. This emotion of familiarity was what I experienced when I watched the videos posted by current students on YouTube during my research. The compilation of videos describing their journey to Queen's, their tips on moving abroad, and their favourite spots in the city helped eliminate my anxiety about moving abroad.

The videos on Instagram by the School of Psychology faculty members also made me realise how welcoming, inclusive, and supportive the university is, as it caters to the needs of each student. Thus, I was keen on exploring Belfast, which has a rich history and a mix of calm and vibrant energy. I am happy I took the step, for the city brought me closer to family and gave me friends I treasure so much that it feels impossible to live without them.

Life beyond Queen's

My course at Queen's is undoubtedly a stepping stone for me in the right direction. Everything I have learned from my lectures will help me beyond the classroom. The placement module is a perfect example of this, as I was able to put theory into practice. My experience as a hospital outreach volunteer at the Royal Victoria Hospital has given me insights into what working within a healthcare setting looks like.

"I am happy I took the step, for the city brought me closer to family and gave me friends I treasure so much that it feels impossible to live without them."

Moreover, the interactions I had with the children on a day-to-day basis helped me understand how to adapt each intervention I planned and how to carry them out. I recognised the need to tailor each theoretical approach according to the situation and requirements of each child.

Queen's has also allowed me to develop my skills beyond academics by volunteering with Handy Helpers and taking up leadership roles such as being the course representative for my cohort. These have aided me in developing those key transferable skills that will prepare me to thrive within the workforce.
