To achieve sustainability action, staff and student support is needed throughout campus, within teaching, research, operations and the students’ union.
On this page we have included information on those groups, staff and students who are key to decision-making and the delivery of key sustainability strategies and initiatives.
BOARDS AND GROUPS

The University Executive Board
The University Executive Board (UEB) is responsible for the development of the Corporate Plan, and the development and implementation of approved strategies to support delivery of the Corporate Plan.
- Queen’s Sustainability Board
The Sustainability Board is responsible for the overseeing and monitoring the University’s Strategy 2030 commitments to embrace the Sustainable Development Goals across our activities. The Board will meet quarterly to review the progress of the University moving towards Net Zero. The group is joint chaired by Professor Michael Alcorn, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Strategic Projects and Sustainability, and Sara Lynch, Head of Sustainability.
The board consists of the following individuals: 7 academic staff nominees, 18 professional services nominees, 1 trade union representative and 3 student representatives.
- The Carbon Management Plan Development Group
The Carbon Management Group leads in the development and delivery of the Net-Zero Strategy for Queen’s with the support of the following Working Groups:
Carbon Change Management Group
Focussed on development and delivery of a staff and student engagement strategy to support the delivery of the University’s Net Zero and wider sustainability ambitions. The development of a net-zero strategy, engagement and communication plan which will provide a ‘Pathway to Sustainability’. The group is chaired by Professor Peter Robertson (School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering) and is composed off 8 academic nominees, 7 professional service staff and 1 student representative.
Carbon Technical Group
Focussed on the development and delivery of ‘technical’ solutions to addressing Net Zero. The Group is chaired by Peter Erwin (Head of Estates Services) and is composed of 6 professional service staff and 1 academic nominee.
Carbon Scope 3 Group
Focussed on the development and delivery of strategies for the measurement of emissions associated with travel, waste and procurement and development and implementation of action plans to reduce these. The Group is Chaired by Joanne Mohammed and is composed off 4 professional service staff and 2 academic nominees.
Carbon Adaptation and Off-setting Group
Development of an off-setting and adaptation strategy for the University.
- Fairtrade Steering Group
The Fairtrade Steering Group is focused on the renewal and achievement of the Fairtrade certification. The group is chaired by Brian Horgan, Head of Campus Food and Drink and is composed of 5 professional service staff and 1 student representative.
