The Centre for Leadership, Ethics and Organisation are delighted to invite you to join our research seminar from Professor Ralf Barkemeyer, Professor of CSR, Centre of Excellence for Sustainability, Kedge Business School. The session will be Chaired by Dr Shirley-Ann Hazlett.

In this paper, a novel dataset of 200 corporate scandals is used to analyze how mass media coverage of corporate scandals is impacted by levels of stigmatization prior to, as well as corporate responses in the immediate aftermath of, the emergence of a scandal. As the dataset covers a period of 30 years, the researchers are able to provide a dynamic and contextualized picture of how stigmatization and corporate responses shape the extent, length, and peak of media coverage. In line with expectancy violation theory, the researchers consistently find that stigmatized organizations are associated with lower levels of media attention in the wake of a corporate scandal.
