Queen’s Essentials: Resources to Support Your University Journey

New to campus and don’t know what resources are available to you? We’re here to help.

At Queen’s, we offer our students more than just classes. We provide a wide range of resources to support you academically, personally, and professionally throughout your time here.

The McClay Library

The McClay Library is one of the most important resources on campus for our students, which is why it’s open 24/7.

Every course will be given a recommended reading list and any titles featuring on that list will be available to borrow in the library on a first come, first served basis. Demand will be high at the beginning of term, so be sure to check out availability as soon as possible!

If you can’t find a particular book or have a question on what’s available, be sure to talk to one of our librarians who would be happy to assist you.

The library also provides students with study spaces, quiet study spaces and computer stations. If you need a laptop, you can loan one from the library.

Student Support

Over in One Elmwood Student Centre and Students’ Union, you will find out student support teams.

Here to help

Teaching Staff

Our lecturers and professors are here to guide and support you throughout your studies. Each member of staff has dedicated office hours where you can drop in with questions, and you can also reach them through Canvas or email. Whether it’s extra help with an assignment, clarification on a topic, or general academic advice, they’re always happy to help.

Campus Maps

The Queen’s Campus is large, which is why we have downloadable maps to help you get to where you’re going. Maps are also located around our campus too.

Queen’s App

The Queen’s app is a great one-stop hub that allows you to access your student card, that you’ll need to get into the Library or student accommodation, view the map of key locations, information on your library account and more.

Canvas

Canvas is another essential app for our students as it’s where you’ll get access to class materials, assignments, grades and feedback and is also how we encourage students to communicate with professors, lecturers and classmates.

Mentorships

At Queen’s, we have a number of different mentorship programmes for you to get involved with:

Peer Mentor Training Programme

Our Peer Mentor Scheme pairs new students with experienced undergraduates who have already navigated the transition to higher education. With their support, settling into life at Queen’s becomes easier and far less daunting.

Reverse Mentoring

Interested in making a difference? Our Reverse Mentoring programme gives you the chance to share your unique experiences as a Queen’s student to help staff better understand everyday student life.

As a mentor, you’ll reflect on your journey and pass on valuable insights. Mentors are matched with staff based on their motivations and interests, ensuring meaningful connections. For more information, click here!

AHSS Mentoring

If you’re studying within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (AHSS), you can benefit from the AHSS Mentoring Programme. This initiative connects students with industry professionals, giving you the chance to:

Zoe Brankin

Staff Writer | Queen's Global

Hi, I'm Zoe, and I'm proud to be part of the Queen's Global team.

Over the past six years, I've held roles that let me create content for a variety of audiences, from start-ups to larger organisations. At Queen's, I'm always exploring new and creative ways to bring fresh content ideas to our main website.

Outside of work, I love reading (I even run a local book club), spending time with my dogs, and never missing an opportunity for a coffee or brunch outing.
